Post subject:  gas/temp gauges

my gas and temp gauges work sometimes, sometimes not.
there is no rhyme or reason to it.
fuel sending unit is new.
fuses seem to be ok maybe the wrong amps in some cases but not blown.
could it be the wire connection at the fuse box?

Grounds tend to be an issue.

As CJ said grounding is one suspect. The grounding of instrument panel is rather indirect relying on sheet metal screws that fasten it to dash.

Another reason for intermittent function of fuel & temperature gages could be a power feed problem. Both of those gages require 5 volts supplied by a voltage limiter that plugs into the circuit board, or is integral to fuel gage depending on year of your car. If power to or from that regulator is interrupted by a poor connection the gages will cut in and out. Where both gages work interment, as a pair, I suspect that their power supply has been compromised in some way. Circuit board could be degraded and or its connector pins loose, a poor connection between circuit board pins and wire harness.

Check here for applicable wiring diagram if you don’t have one on hand.
