Let me preface this by saying I have never removed a transmission or clutch, and this is a brand new undertaking for me. That should explain my level of questions.

Issue: 4-spd OD manual tranny, and my issue is shudder/vibration when taking off from a full stop. The vibration once moving, and everything works as it should. From that, I'm guessing flywheel may need resurfacing and pilot bushing replacement. I went ahead and ordered a full clutch kit just in case.

1. For removal, the service manual mentions using engine support fixture C-3487-A up against the underside of the oil pan flange, and then raise the engine slightly. Is this needed? Do people just put some pressure with a jack? What is the right thing to do here?

2. What kind of grease do you all use to replace the recommended MOPAR Multipurpose grease 4318063?

3. Do you add any grease to the pilot bushing as suggested in the manual, and I've read to not use any bushing that has magnetic properties, as they should be bronze with oil impregnation (in which case people said not to use any grease)... What is the practice with our vehicles?

4. Do I need "DEXRON II" ATF for the tranny fluid as called for in the manual? Or is newer stuff better? Suggestions on fluid would be welcome.

5. Any other helpful tips for transmission removal and clutch replacement?

Thanks!

1. I simply use a jack stand to support the back of the engine as is.

2. I use whatever high quality grease I have on hand.

3. Bronze bushing, no grease. Lay the bushing upright on your thumb (sealing the bottom as well as possible, fill the bushing with motor oil to the brim, place another finger over-top the bushing, and squeeze the oil until it wicks out the outside. Done.

4. The newer Dexrons supersede the old ones. I think Dexron VI is the latest.

5. If you can't get the old pilot bushing out, fill the cavity behind it chalk full with grease, grab a socket that fills the center as tightly as possible, install an extension so no grease can come out the middle of the socket either, then give the extension a swift whack with a hammer. Should pop the old bushing right out.
