Post subject:  exhust leak.....

Hey guys, I have a 71 Scamp with a slant 6 (225 C.I. ) with a one barrel carb, my exhust manifold cracked in 3 spots so I replace it. I put it on with a new Flo pro gasket set, and it still leaks under the center right side it maybe leaking also where the 2 manifolds (intake and exhust) mate together by the 3 bolts holding them or at the head side??? I also have a leak at the heat riser bowl for the heat riser control for the carb, no one make a gasket for this. Also how many different types of washers are you suppose to have on a slant 6 on the exhust and intake???
Since I am new to the slant 6 world could someone give me some slant 6 knowledge for this problem??? Thanks alot, 340man

Hey 340 man,
Felpro gaskets definatly not the best choice for this app.
Theres a great article on this in the articles section.
There are some aussie gaskets that are supposed to be outstanding
for this. Not sure of manufacturer but im sure someone here will post
info. What I can tell you is manifolds should be checked for warpage
with straight edge. There are two differant washers on manifolds,
round ones on end studs with special nuts and one in the center.
most of the rest should be triangle washers but this depends on year.
Metal gasket that fits between manifolds allmost never seals, aussie
gaskets are thick and of composite material. manifold torque is also
very important. 10 lb. aussie gaskets may be even less.

You can find the Aussie gaskets here. IIRC the hot box gasket will run you about $15 US shipped to your door with an exchange rate of 1 US dollar to about .95AU. They also have the intake/exhaust gaskets.

Remflex makes a great in/ex that you can find at various auto suppliers. $34 is the cheapest I've found it

This place has them for $35. I saw it elsewhere for a buck cheaper but don't recall where

why does that site say "60-83?"

what is different about 84-87 manifolds/heads, from those prior, that would call for a different gasket? (nothing I know of... pretty sure the manifolds in my 87 came out of an 81).

It's a typo. I called them on it a few years ago and they never changed it.

Isn't 83 when they stopped using slants in cars and 87 when they stopped for trucks?

i think so on those years,Ted...there is no differance in manifolds gasket over the years...except some manifactors are better thn others...do a search for best ones

I think they continued to manufacture the SL6 as industrial engine in Mexico until 2003.
