Hello fellas [and ladies if any present], :roll:
In the process of a long term engine build for my pick-up and was
wondering if anyone has tried them in a /6 ? Read an article a couple months ago,and im considering them for this engine. With these rings there is a noticleable increase in compression. This would allow less milling of the head or block , would it not? Also a question on the stand pipes Doc recommends in oil drain back holes at lifters. How tall + what size should these be? Also what size should oil drip hole be over fuel pump arm? Also debateing cam choice, any recomendations? Remember engines going in a pick-up,want power + torque 3000-3500 and below. B.T.W. engine is a 73 model 225. also thought about a stroker, if I can find some 198 rods. Would a P.U. be a good place for a stroker? Also shooting for long life +durability. As best as i can tell you right now bores will be 20.0 over + compression around 9-9.5 Thats enough to think about for now, hope I didnt strain anybodys brain.Thanks in advance. Rooster

my experience with gapless ring only relates to motorcycles, but here's my $.02. . . . .

i put a set of Total Seal rings in a Honda 350-4. it became much harder to get started and it smoked @ idle. had a leak down test done to see what was happening. it held 100% for as long as i wanted it to. seems the perfect seal was sucking oil thru the valve guides. it ran great once i got it started. get off idle and the smoke would stop. pull up to a lite and the smoke would slowly fade back into view.

i was considering them for a old Indian rebuild. i learned that if used, the spring tension of the oil ring would need to be decreased. if used as they come out of the box, it would cause ripples in the air cooled cylinders.

they r a cool idea to think to put in a motor. but i think we all want our rings to be ready to run as they come out of the box. seems to me that Total Seal rings just need a lot more science to the to get them to work.

Thanks fellas for info on rings. Dan, do you think the problem was with ring seal or pulling oil through valve guides? Any thoughts on other questions in post if you have time.

I don't use stand-offs that often... instead, I spot-drill a locating hole then grind a large chamfer, onto the lower edge of the lifter bore, then hone-out the bore for better cam lobe / lifter oiling.
