Post subject: | Piston/rings selection |
Hello Slant Sixers, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about brand or type of piston/rings to use for a standard rebuild back to street. The cylinders are going to need to be honed, and I dont plan on changing the compression ratio with any head mods. Thanks! |

*bored and honed. Also trying to do this on a relatively lean budget, which I am finding is probably not possible. All advice is welcome. |

OK...Ill bite. If you only have money for rings ,bearings , gasket set and timing chain....($200)....(you do have that much?)....and the bores are not that bad......add the price of three tools : a ridge reamer ($40)and a cylinder hone($30) and a digital caliper ($20). Notice there is enough left from $100 for some nice ales...... Before you remove the pistons (head off).....use the caliper to determine the bore size in the middle of the bore.....and at the top of the cylinder (the Ridge). If these two measurements are Close Enough.....use the ridge reamer to carefully Machine the ridge out of the bore. There is a penalty for sloppy work. Once the ridge is gone remove the pistons. Then use the hone and an electric drill and lots of good oil to hone the cylinders till the Glaze is Gone. Remeasure your bores to see if Close Enough. Add cheap cast iron rings carefully gapped to your really clean pistons and rods. If everything works out the cast iron rings will wear in after 3000 miles and other than being a little noisy on cold mornings yer Rebuilt. The motor in my race car is exactly this...... a $200 Summit racing rebuild kit. .......and a whole day of paying attention. It works OK. |

To rebuild the engine right you will have to have the block bored oversize and honed. Cylinders wear is like on a offset like an egg off round and you have to fix that so they are round again. If you doint do that you are wasting your time and money on a rebuild doint let people tell you crap like Sandy . Do It right and you will have a happy motor. Its your time and money . Thanks Ron ![]() It Aint Over Until I Win |
