Ok, so I have gotten to the point in my teardown where I want to pull the cam(its hydraulic). How do I get the lifters out? What else do I need to do to pull the cam. I'm a newbee at this. |

there is a lifter puller not sure who makes it...if you are reusing lifters keep them in order |

I used a pair of needle nose pliers. Expand them inside the lifter to pull up, then grab the upper edge and gently twist and pull. There are lifter extractor tools somewhere I am sure, though the pliers worked plenty well for me. ~RDE~ |

With head on: If it is '75-80 head, you cannot get the lifters out (pushrod holes too small), but '81-87 you can. Pre-75 heads have lots of room. I use a large magnetic pickup tool and if they get stuck on the way up, I grab with a long needlenose. Other ways work too, as mentioned... Lou |

I tried grabbing the #1 exhaust with a needle nose and pulling but it seemed stuck. I guess I need to shoot some carb cleaner and see if there is a little carbon that needs to be loosened up. The all move up and down freely and spin. Once the lifters are out what else do I need to do to pull the cam? I know the distributor needs to come out but what else? |

Cam is out, where do I look on it to find out what it "is", almost surely stock. The lifters had enough stuff on them that all I could do was pull them up in the bores till they stuck, pulled the cam, and beat them out from the top. Now to scrape, degrease and paint the block and pan. I also need to order my cam, gasket set, have the head cleaned and 0.040" taken off, send a pulley to Charlie... May is coming quick and I still have a lot of work to do. |
