OK here is what I have:
1964 1/2 Barracuda
225 c.i. engine
3 speed auto trans with floor shifter.

I have several questions:

First the motor has been seized for a decade. My buddy and got the motor and trans out today but could not separate the trans from the motor. Is there a way to get the tranny off without unbolting the flex plate?

Second, there were two cable coming from my shifter to the trans. One was the shifter cable, which I finally got off.

The other cable went to some lever type thing on the shifter. I could not get it off of the trans. I had to disconnect the cable at the shifter to get it off the car.

What is that cable and how do I get it off? I can not find a reference to it in the shop manual.

The trans is bone dry and has not moved in a decade. Do you guys think it is any good, or should I just save up for a new one?

I need to figure this out soon so I can have a junk dealer come and haul it away this coming week.

Yeah. remove the bellhousing bolts and gently pull the transmission off. It will come off and leave the converter on the flexplate.

That other cable is the park cable. Been a while since I worked on a cable shifted transmission. I really don't remember, so I don't wanna lead you down the wrong road here. I am sure on this site there is someone who knows. I will look in my 63 dart service manual in the meantime, though.

It's possible. I would try it first, but more than likely the seals have dried out.

The main reason you don't have reference to that shifter setup in the shop manual, is the wrong year. All 64 Barracudas, with an auto trans, had a pushbutton shifter on the dash. 65 Barracudas had a two cable operated shifter on the floor. 66 Barracudas had a mechanical linkage type shifter, either on the columm or on the floor.
The second cable on the 64 and 65 transmissions goes to the rear of the trans, and is for the park mechanism.

You can unbolt the tranny from the engine, and remove it, leaving the converter on the flexplate. Then you might be able to get at the converter to flexplate bolts.

Thanks guys I will try to pry it off tomorrow. It only moved a little when I unbolted it.
Oh and for the record I was only going to junk the motor because I already have a freshly rebuilt one.

So it makes sens that is a park cable, any idea how I get it off?

You know that is odd. My VIN and paperwork and everything else say this is a 64, and in fact I had a 64 back in the 80s and it had the exact same $#!+ setup.

Does anyone have a shop manual showing the floor shifter? If so could you scan and post those pages?

- Loosin the nut on the lock post and tap it enough to release the cable.
- Use a thin blade screw driver to lift the release wire, then remove the cable.

Well I got everything apart. Since the car sat for 12 years I am guessing I need a rebuild. Cheapest place I could find was $455.00.
I currently have $74.00 left in the bank.
Being sick sucks!
I hope they find me a new liver soon.
I just want to drive this car before I die!

Are you talking about that much for a transmission rebuild? Listen guy, if you can take that transmission off the engine, you can rebuild it all by yourself. The 904 is by far the easiest transmission to rebuild. I recommend getting the "ATSG" service manual for the 727/904. It is probably the most comprehensive manual out there. They are like 20 bucks on FeeBay. I am not kidding you here. A grammar school kid could build a 904. They are really that simple. That's what got me started rebuilding transmissions. I'm sure there are enough people here to help you out of a jam if you need it. I know I will. I wish I was closer. I would build it for you myself for free and show you how if you bought parts.

Transmissions terrify me. Several times I have taken them apart (with manuals) and never got them back together.

Hey thanks olafla. But seriously I will never even attempt another transmission.
If I ruin it, which I will, then I will not even be able to get it rebuilt.

I can tear down an engine with my eyes closed, but I will never open up a tranny again, sorry.
