Post subject:  82 D150 backfires and spits and sputters when warm...

hey all, I'm new to these forums but I like what I see already. I'm actually posting for my dad, its his Ram...I have a F150 with a straight 6 and a 4 speed.

what's happening is when the truck has been driven a while and is warm, it will spit and sputter and sometimes backfire. it is a 1bbl carburetor and the truck is all stock with 110k original miles...any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say start by checking your timing. And report back with what you find.

Post subject:  Lean Burn

Does the truck still have the Lean Burn ignition system on it?

my 83 D-150 had a consistent miss at idle,, when a timing light was put on it,, the timing mark when under the strobe light would "hunt" ,,,move 5 to 8 degrees with every hit.
I did this probably a year and a half ago,, pulled out the lean burn distributor and wiring and put in a 1960 170 ( as identified by SSD) distributor that I got for free out of a salvage yard pile ,, I did put in new points and cap and condenser,, kept the original coil,,

now the timing mark is rock solid,, with the lean burn when I would wind the motor above 3000 rpm, it sounded like a rock crusher, with the old 170 distributor it pulls easily to 4500,, not fast , but it does pull,,, starts on the first hit,, no miss at idle,, I have all the stuff to put an HEI on,, but it runs so well on this old POS distributor, I have just left it alone.

regards
