Will a head off an 80's engine (hydraulic cam) work on an older block, say from '66?

My best guess is if you change the rocker arms, yes.

Yes, it will work. You'll need to use the mechanical valve gear from the solid lifter engine, but with the rear-most hold down bolt from the late head. The '81+ valve cover will need to stay with the head.

The later heads have induction hardened exhaust valve seats which are more wear resistant. The '67 and newer heads have an improved combustion chamber.
