Post subject:  Engine I.D. help?

MY 63 dart I purchased back in the fall has a blue engine, my research says it should be red. Here are the numbers stamped into the top of the block just below the No. 1 plug.
RW225R 2995 118

Do these tell more than it's a 225?
Date?

Ahh. the casting number indicates a '68-70 225.
What do the other stamped numbers mean?

Interesting ID stamp. If the casting number on the manifold side of the block is 2806830 (with or without additional numbers appended after a dash), then the stamping decodes as follows:

RW: Passenger car engine built at Windsor, Ontario
225: Cubic inch displacement
R: Regular fuel
2995: Built on October 9, 1969
118: Engine daily serial number

If your car's got an automatic transmission, you need to make sure there's a spacer between the torque converter nose and the crankshaft rear flange counterbore. The counterbore and nose grew larger together for the 1968 model year, and if a '68-up engine (w/large crank counterbore) is used in front of a '67-down automatic (w/small-nose torque converter) without the spacer, the trans front pump bushing and seal will die early and often and you can get vibration issues.

Thanks Dan. I will check out the torque converter situation. Would the space be custom or an aftermarket or OEM piece?

Question: How does 2995 translate to Oct 9,1969?

Chrysler began using a 10,000-day calendar on 29 July 1961 (0001). You can find the portion of this 10-kiloday calendar at the front of most parts books. You can enter a 4-digit date code into a decoder such as this one to get the calendar date associated with the code.

I have the adapter ring(s) if needed.

Thanks doc. Will I have to pullythe tranny to see or can I tell with the inspection cover off?

Unfortunately, because the spacer goes between the torque converter nose and the crankshaft counterbore, either the engine or the trans must be pulled to see if it's there. :-(
