In my 1980 Aspen, the transmission is causing me heartache when the car gets warmed up. If i get it up above 65 right away before its gets hot than i'm ok until I fall back below 60, than it slips and i have to find the "sweet spot" to get it back up above 65. If its a zone that I can't go above 60 than i'm screwed, cause the tranny won't hold it in drive (i drive in 2 at this point) and i can't get it back to over 65 in D because it just slips.

Its got a cable type kickdown linkage that i'm sure is set ok, a stall torque converter, and the tranny fluid looks good even with all the slipping and temperature related symptons. Second, first and reverse work just fine.

Was any work done to the tranny? Rebuild, shift kit, fluid and filter change, etc?

previous owner said he put a shift kit in when he rebuilt tranny (around 4 yrs ago), what kind and type no idea..And i think i remember him saying a 2500 stall convertor...I've drained fluid, didn't take pan off so didn't change filter...and even added some lucas but still have issue...I am thinking I'm just going to buy my buddies old 72 trans (low miles)and put the transgo reprogrammer on I just orded...I really just want to know what could be wrong with mine though

Slipping could be caused by something as simple as incorrect fluid level, plugged filter, and loose or improperly torqued valve body bolts. These are all items that can be easily checked by dropping the pan. Or something else requiring transmission removal.

Remember to check fluid level when fully warmed up, in Neutral, not Park, and on level ground.

Also if your kick-down cable has not been properly adjusted, and the car has been driven a lot of miles in that condition, there is a good possibility you have burnt up the clutches.
