Ok my Duster always dies when I put it into gear, and needs help staying running with a little help with gas pedal to even stay up for very long. I put a new carb, spark plugs, battery, fuel filter, fuel pump and still couldnt get it running. So I went to autozone and they said points and condensor, I changed them out and well now it wont fire. I lined up the balancer at 0 and the rotor was a 1o'clock position, I cant remember what number cyl that is, but I noticed some play in the distributor um, I would call it the stem that that rotor sits on. ( im only 19 so im not very good at this yet) but it rotates a little with ease. And when I turn the motor over by hand the rotor hardly moves, sometimes it moves a bit, but not much. Should I be worried? I looked at summit for a new distributor and my car is a 72 but the points distributor in summit says it wont work for my car and says it needs the elec. points = $50, elec $350. SO im lost and need to know what the distrib should look like on a 72. Thanks tons

The #1 plug wire is usually at the 4 o'clock position. Check wiring on cap, rotating clockwise 1 5 3 6 2 4. The movement of the rotor would be the mechanical advance.

Get the balancer back to O degrees top dead center and then reinstall the distributor so the rotor (the end with the metal contact) points to 4 oclock. With the distributor cap in place, make sure that wire (at 4 oclock) goes to the #1 plug and going in a clockwise rotation that the sequence is as Fopar described 1 5 3 6 2 4. So the 6 oclock should be #5, 8 oclock 3 etc..
Your distributor should have both mechanical and vacumn advance. The metal pod on the side of the distributor is the vacumn advance and the mechanical advance is comprised of some weights and springs below the plate in the distributor. You won't see the mechanical advance unless you disassemble the distributor.

Yes, there will be a small amount of movement when you grab the rotor and try to turn it. That would be the mechanical advance as Fopar described
