Just brought a '65 Dart back to life. It was sitting in a yard under a tree for 20+ years. Love these cars! Somehow it just doesn't feel like work...

So. The one thing I can't figger out is the vent line on the gas fill tube. It comes out of the fill tube just about 2" or so from the quarter panel (in the trunk). It runs up, then down thru the same trunk hole as the fill does then it just stops. Open to air. Obviously a tank breather.

The problem is I can smell gas when I'm driving. I'm thinking I can't cap this off as it will cause pressure to rise in my tank, maybe overcoming my needle and flooding the carb. And there's nothing to route it to. No charcoal canisters back then...

So whattado?

Gas smell can be from the front too... don't drive it until you've got that fixed if possible. Fuel vapors are extremely flammable and will kill your braincells.

Check your fuel line, make sure the rubber parts where they meet the fuel pump are good, and where the filter goes is good, with appropriate clamps. Could be overfueling causing you to smell fuel, could be a number of things.

All hoses and clamps new (had to!) New fuel pump. Carb rebuilt. New(ish) gas tank. New sending unit gasket. Good fill tube seal. No visible leaks.

Other than the carb bowl vent (Holley 1920) the only thing I can think of is the vent tube.

I don't have any carpet in it yet, and the speaker shelf is open (to the trunk). Also has a little cancer on the trunk floor.

Perfect combination? Luckily here in TX it's already friggin 100* and the windows are always down!

Float level could be a bit high allowing fuel dumping into manifold after engine has run. Re-check fuel pump’s connections for tightness. It doesn’t take much fuel on a hot day to make a big stink.

Also could be a pin hole in top of tank out of sight from under the car.

That vent pokes through a hole in rear frame member, is open to atmosphere at all times, and is a good reason not to weld under car while tank is in car… LOL

Thanks Guys. Rechecked the hoses and lowered my float. I can still smell a little from time to time, I just gotta seal up the trunk floor and speaker shelf.
