Post subject:  Orange box overheating?

I noticed the other day that there are yellow steaks coming down from the orange and gray ignition boxes on the firewall of my Lebaron. I'm assuming this means they have overheated, and the yellow stuff is epoxy or something. Can anyone give any insight to this, and maybe explain why they would overheat? I haven't had any problems starting the car, and I really don't know how long the yellow streaks have been there.

It's getting very difficult to buy a new current-production Mopar ignition box that's well enough made to be worth messing with. The orange box (and all other Mopar-brand boxes) have been junk for quite a few years now. You can get a NOS US-made box from Old Car Parts Northwest, or do the HEI upgrade.

Actually, I just printed out your first post from the 'HEI Electronic Ignition Retrofit How-To' thread. I've been meaning to do that for a while, but other problems arose and I put it off. Now that I've got mostly everything else sorted out, I think I will give it a shot. Thanks for the input.

Is that a Mopar Performance "orange box" iginition module, or the stock 3 pin orange painted EGR timer box?

Just checking ???

i'm not sure if it's an EGR timer or not. the electrical stuff on this car confuses me.

The red box on the right is an EGR time delay controller, probably stamped 4111 481 (or maybe it's orange and stamped 4111 180). Don't know what the grey box in the middle is; can't see its stamped part number. The grey box on the left is your ignition module.

Dan,

The box on the left looks like the voltage regulator. Wouldn't this car have Lean Burn/ESC?

When electronic modules first came on the scene (mostly in the '70s) they were sealed with a rigid epoxy - that caused thermal failures when the electronics heated/ cooled but couldn't move or flex.

The engineers tried a new flexible "potting" epoxy that usually worked ok, but there seemed to be batches that would "melt" & run everywhwere, (sometimes in the box on the dealer shelf). I recently changed the original ign module on a 78 aspen 225 that "melted" but had never skipped a beat. I doubt that anything is actually wrong with your modules (other than 30 years of underhood exposure)

The orange box is probably EGR timer, & the middle silver-gray is another emissions box - might be a carburetor idle solenoid control.

Duh, of course it is. Read what I meant, not what I typed!

I've never had any problems starting the car, so I think they're holding up pretty well. As far as what the boxes do, I think the orange is ignition, and the grey one is possibly an egr timer. I have a FSM, but there were a handful of different boxes that could've been on the firewall that year. One of these days I'll figure it out, but for now they all seem to be working.

It's not. There is no ignition box in your picture.
