Pardon my ignorance but suspension and steering is still a mystery to me.

Had the 61 up for an oil change yesterday and saw what appears to be a big chunk of rubber falling off the lower connection of the idler arm??

Is this a bushing? What's involved in repair/replace. Part source?

Also, would sure like to gain some knowledge in this area so if anyone has any links........

Thanks much.

Assuming it isn't road debris that got hung up there, it is probably the idler arm joint boot. The purpose of the boot is to keep abrasive road grit out of the joint.

I tried a cursory look around to see if the boot could be purchased separately. No luck.

You might try these folks. Something most likely will be close enough for what you need. They also have a million other suspension soft parts.

Dan mentioned this thread to me and i went ahead and purchased the books. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15780

the Stockel and Stockel book was absolutely great in seeing how all the parts work together to make them function properly. the Petersen's Automotive was great for helping me understand how to approach problems the cheapest and most effective way.

i haven't gotten the factory manual yet. (i'm a cheap bastard)

try http://www.abesbooks.com and find a book that was printed around the year of your vehicle.

Thanks V-Boy

I've seen Dan's mantra of "buy these books!" many many times here on /6org.

I've had the 1960 FSM and the 61 supplement since I got the car.

I found the Peterson book on my shelf with the manuals from all the other cars/motorcycles I have had over the years.
I believed it belonged to one of my older brothers who were all hot rodders back in the day of George Lucas and cruising 10th St here in Modesto. Somehow I ended up with it.

I finally broke down and spent $9.49 for the Stockel ($5 shipping) and it is somewhere between here and Toano VA.

Thanks again.
