Post subject:  Head Swap

I understand that all /6 heads are interchangable and the later heads have some chamber improvements over the earlier heads.

That being said, I have a head from a 77 Aspen 225 and am mulling over the idea of getting some work done on it and putting it on my 170.

Would like to have some porting work done and bigger valves.

My limited knowledge tells me I will need to use the 170 pushrods and also plug the holes that accomodate emissions components.

Am I missing anthing? Is the valve train compatible with my 170?

Thanks to all.

The head will bolt straight on and may not even have an air injection port to plug. The '77 head will have tapered seat spark plugs, no spark plug tubes and the lifters will not come out with the head installed. Your valve gear will bolt straight on, but the '77 valve gear will work just fine. Use whatever is in the best condition.

Is there a preferred head to use for my 68 dart w/ 225? Mine has a burnt valve & am considering picking up a reman head. Would a later year be better due to hardened seats? Are there any good articles on the web about slant head casting #'s and my options?

Your 68 head is about as good as it gets.

Hi 80fbody, welcome to the forum.

Do yourself a favour and browse through the FAQ in the engine section, and follow all the links, you will find all the info you'll ever need there, if not make a search. There is an article on the heads in the tech articles, follow this link.

Olaf.
