| Post subject: | Hi stall selection |
At the stage now of getting the hi stall done, is there any thing I need to look out for or do I just give a standard tourque converter to my local transmission shop? I'm using the eagle kv1 cam ive been recommended to get a 3000 to 3300 rpm stall, is this too radical for my build? How do I work out what stall I need? For the transmission, it's a push button 904 it's already been reconditioned, is there a way to make the transmission stronger, or am I just wasting my time and money? Shift kit perhaps? I like the idea of a manual valve body but I don't want to be changing gears on the dash all the time, gear shift on the floor different story. |

shift kit is a great idea, itl firm up the shifts and that really helps a trans with a more powerful motor live a long life. The smooth drawn out shifts of a stocker and the high tstall create alot of heat too so maybe a cooler of some sort. A full manual valve body is a bit of work to live with unless you have a floor shifter but it gets old rather fast. I would look into a TransGo kit, maybe a stage 2 build. Short firm shifts and full manual control while still retaining automatic functions. full manual lets you shift into first at ANY speed, scary the first time you do it on accident. Stage 3 hits very hard, not for the week. |

Shift kit only changes the shift characteristics, it really does nothing to make the trans any stronger. Also be aware that some of the kits that promise "neck snapping" shifts are really just putting in overlap. (The trans is actually locking in 2 gears at once) You can tell by watching the front of the car. If it drops on the shift, you've got overlap. As far as stall goes, I've always used as much as I could get. I have driven a 3800 stall on the street and had no issues at all. A good auxillary cooler is a must, especialy on the street. |

When my duster still had the 904 i drove around a 3000stall from edge converters this car has always been my daily driver i never had any issues its kinda lame on cruising because you feel like the car doesnt make much power with light throttle but when you stomp it the converter flashes and would blow the tires off so it was fun at the track and did awesome burnouts. I could actually get it to footbrake at 3000 to about 3300 once i kept finding more power in the motor. Kev |

If you do go with a manual valve body, which personally I wouldn't, you can still just cruise around in top gear. I have a friend with a 360 Phoenix, he just puts it in D and drives, he only uses the lower 2 gears when he wants to "give it the beans". Don't forget you can still shift manually without having the manual valve body. I always shift manually at the track. What rear gears are you planning to use? |

Going to go 3.55 in the back. Any ideas of a transmission shop to get a high stall in Perth? |

I have a PB shifter on a homemade console between the seats in my car. As you said the console is much better then the dash for a manual valve body. |
