I just finished up the mechanical work on my Valiant and was able to get out and stretch its legs a bit this weekend, but I made a bit of an interesting discovery.

I converted over to a four speed, the tranny I swapped in is a short tail A-833 with the big 5.125 input bearing retainer and a 1975 date code. I love the OD tranny and this is probably my sixth four speed conversion.

However, this particular transmission is not an Overdrive! It has the standard gear ratios and the 3/4 gears are not flopped, much to my surprise when I though I was going to pull it into OD on the freeway!

Anyone else have a standard ratio tranny with the large IBR?

I always assumed the large IBR indicated an OD tranny.

You can swap the guts from the regular to the OD casing if needed (with proper bearings/etc...). Unless you totally grenaded the case I'm not sure why you'd do it.

Well, that's just freakin' super.

At least I can drive it. Guess I'm still looking for an actual A-body overdrive four speed.... :?

I forgot there is one other way to make that work...in 1975...the 3 speeds still had the bolt pattern for the small IBR...mopar made a special IBR for them that will fit a OD bellhousing but has the same bolt pattern as the older straight A-833s and 3 speeds...

If you didn't mind a straight across trade on your current box, and if it's in good shape, I do have a 1978 A-833OD that was rebuilt 8 years back (works great, just pulled it in lieu of a iron cased OD for drag racing).
