Okay...1st off the speedometer never worked properly. The MPH would never go to 0, it would simply cease operation at 15MPH and stay there. When in operation, the speed would waggle...

Example:
*Driving 45MPH* : The speedometer would waggle between 40 and 50.
Then last week since she's driving a billion times better, I was able to drive over 75MPH and all hell broke loose with the speedometer. The needle on the speedometer would fluctuate between 40 and 120MPH lol...It was comical until the constant ting-ing of the speedometer resulted in it no longer functioning.

I took out the cable and drove while I observed the cable. It's spinning so I thought "Hey, I just need a new speedometer cluster!" . So I plugged in the other speedometer cluster and um, yeah...That didn't work...As soon as I started driving, the speedometer just shot up to 120 and stayed right there and started making a "ting-ting-ting" noise.

So I know it could be 3 things : A.) The speedometer cable is bad. B.) The speedometer cluster is bad. C.) Both are bad.

So what's the deal?!?

My vote is for a cable problem. I have experienced this problem several times before where speedo bounces back & forth. I found that if the metal cable is in good shape, a good dose of lubricant applied along the cable solved the problem.

If the cable is frayed it needs to be replaced, as no amount of lube will keep it from fetching up & releasing on every revolution on its way to braking in two.

My 82 Lebaron started this needle hop a few years ago. It was in need of fresh lubricant. I applied white lithium grease to the cable, and the speedo is now steady.

"Ting-ting-ting" means the problem isnt' in the cable. That's the stirrup hitting the cup behind the speedo face. It means the bearing(s) in the speedo head are worn out. See here.

I missed the ting-ting, caught the bouncing needle from both speedo’s. Dan is correct head is probably cooked. However, I suspect your cable is in need of service as well.

If were my car I would have the head rebuilt, and install a new cable.

I agree and that's what I'm going to do - eventually.

Now that I know what it is, (And I thank you, Slant Six Dan) I will have the speedometer fixed. Question : Which one should I have fixed though? I already have one that's not installed that makes the same noise and goes from 0-100 as soon as I accelerate...So I'm thinking that one would make the better candidate since it's removed and I can use my GPS in the meantime without having to drive a car without the instrument cluster. BTW, the current speedometer doesn't "ting" anymore...It just ceased doing anything...BUT the odometer still works.

How's Maine, WJAJR? My family in Rhode Island were whining about snow a couple of days ago...hahaha

It’s cold at night, not so cold during day time here. Occasional snow fall persists, and lots & lots of mud making some back roads impassable. I’m still waiting for the usual spring 12 inch dump of heavy wet snow to round out March, and Charrley to back up his trailer to a snow pile of his choice taking a load of the white stuff south. LOL.

Heck, on second thought, never mind loading that trailer with snow, perhaps the Dart would fit on it. I’ll just ride back to sunny Florida with Charrles and hang with the grandkids down there until the end of black fly season…

Sometimes the speedo cable gets too long (starting to unravel) and pushes against the inside of the speedometer so that the head makes contact inside.


Try shortening the cable a small amount.

The cable does seem quite brittle. Hey 120+ degree heat isn't going to do anything any good.

I don't remember if the other speedometer I had made the tinging noise...So I think tomorrow I'm going to throw some WD-40 on the speedometer and see if it makes a difference.

Dan, is that why the speedometer that is in my Valiant right now doesn't return to 0 and stays at 20? I don't get that at all as to why it does that.

That could be several problems -- worn out bearing, goobered-up spring, bent shaft. Send it in.
