| Post subject: | electric fan thermostat location--slant in a 40 |
time to put wire the electric fan in the slant in 40 project. can't seem to find a place to install the temp switch for it as the opening right above the t-stat is being used for my temp gauge. are there any other tappings into the water jacket that anybody knows of that would work? i'm considering tapping the head right below the alternator bracket bolt into the head, but would preffer not to do this if possible. don't want to use one of the ones that clamps under the upper hose either. looks like a good place for a leak. i would drill and tap the t-stat housing before i drill a new hole in the head. as the t-stat opens and hot water hits the sensor, the fan will come on. |

the housing was my first thought, but due to the depth of the sensor, it is possiblr that it will interfere with the thermostat operation, and even if it doesn't, i'm not so sure there is enough material there to thread. they are pretty thin. could always weld on a threaded coupling, but i am thinking that may warp the t-stat housing, then it will be just like a chevy. a leaking t-stat housing. may still try that though if no better ideas come up thanks. Later model heads, especially 80s heads, have multiple sensor holes. I have run them in tees into the upper hose with no problem. Lou |

Use a cast iron t-stat cover, those are thicker. Off-set the hole / fitting so the probe does not interfer with the top of the thermostat. Another option, some fan control thermostats use a sensor and tube that slips- in between the radator inlet and the upper hose, with the rubber hose compressing around the small tube to create a seal. DD
