First time on this board. I have a '68 Valiant with a 225 slant six. Unfortunately the old engine has started to puke blue smoke, so I need to rebuild it. However, as I am short on cash at the moment to do the modifications I want to it so I am trying to put a simple re-ring kit in a newer 225 I have kicking around. I do not know the year of the newer engine, so I was wondering if anyone could help me identify it. The stamp on the blocks head gasket surface is: 9 225 1025 2E. Any help is greatly appreciated. OK, I think I found my answer in that 9=79. Don't know how you interpret 1025.

Just wondering if I can run my older head on the newer block? I have a custom intake/exhaust system and I have shaved the head so I would like to stay with the older head. Do people tend to like or dislike the newer head? Are there any disadvantages?

Cams should be interchangeable should they not? I ground my old crank so I would like to run it.

Always seems to me numbers don't make sense. I'll have to check the 1025, but it is a cast crank so I know it is 76+

If you misread the 1025, that is mistook the 7 (7025) for a 1 then manufacture date would be

Nope, most definitely 1025. I only need to know for ordering an engine kit. I know it is newer than 76 because of the crank, and I know it is older than 81 because it has mechanical lifters. The engine kits listed show a 76-78 listing and a 79-80 listing. Any ideas what the difference between these two kits would be? Maybe I can figure out which one I require based on some other attribute.

Nobody has any ideas? There has to be some change in 78-79.

I built a 1979 cast crank engine and used a 1978 kit listed at Northern Auto Parts...no difference between the 1976-1980 cast crank engines...
other than my 1979 casting was a bit rough at the oil pump pad casting...

I think some prude had read that note in the Chilton's manual saying that Chrysler had some experimental hydraulic lifters in some late 1978-1979 engines as a test...so they could up the price on the 1979-1980 kits...
