OK i have a 1978 Dodge D100 long bed. 2wd with the slant 6 three speed. it has been converted to a floor shift by the previous owners and doesn't work 100% correct. so i bought a 1980's model slant 6 engine with the 4 speed transmission out of what i believe was a dodge ram but i'm not sure.. all i need to know, is "can the 4 speed transmission bolt up to the D100's engine?"

sweet! i just had a few questions when looking at the two engines. the 4 speed had some new electronics on the engine, so i didn't wanna mess with a full swap-out. my d100 engine is only just rolling over 74,000 original miles, and idk about the other engine. i know a swap would be a waist. so i have a few questions.
1.) which engine is better, the 78' d100 engine. or the early 80's model ram engine. both slant 6's. but which one is actually a better engine? give me details.
2.) which transmission is a better choice in all honesty i figured the original 3 speed was better but i have no clue. please give me some guidance

No question the 4 speed is better. Gears 1,2,3 all have about the same ratio for both transmissions. The 4 speed has an overdrive 4th gear. So through gears 1-3 it will shift and accelerate about the same with about the same amount of ratio/rpm drop between shifts, but you have 1 more gear and much improved fuel economy.

As to which engine is better. It all depends on condition, how they have been treated and maintained.

That only equates to the 1975+ A-833 OD...if he plugs in an NP435 4 speed 4th is direct and the lower gears are very "granny" and it will not bolt directly to the A-230/A-833OD bellhousing...he also has the option that pre-75 trucks could come with the direct ratio 4th gear in certain versions (or he could plug in a B-body A-833...), but would need the pre-74 small IBR.

Best question is: is the shift lever sticking into the top of the tranny case, or is is mounted to the side of the transmission?

If it's #2, you should be good to go...if it's #1...you'll need to rethink this.

my current tranny is mounted on the side, and a hole is cut into the floor with it sticking up. the new tranny is mounted directly into the top of the casing. so that means it wont work correct??

You would need the bellhousing/clutch/flywheel for that guy to make it work...and it has the same final ratio as your 3 speed...it's more heavy duty but the gearing is for hauling things...you may also need to change the floor shift location...it's an NP435...

It is not a direct plug and play...time to go on the hunt for an A-833OD for a truck.
