Got a quote for my exhaust yesterday and am curious what you folks would expect to pay for same. 2 1/4 flanges to 2 1/4 pipe off front Dutra and rear stock to y-pipe I am providing. Collector after y-pipe to 2 1/2 to muffler. Turbo muffler then 2" out the back. All aluminized steel It's a privately owned shop...not a chain. He said he doesn't like to be under the gun...that it may take a day or two. Judging from the looks of his ride, I suspect the guy is anal and will do a nice job...no hack work. What would you expect to pay? THANKS! |

Why being cagey and refusing to tell us what you were quoted? This ain't a guessing game or eBay. Throw us a bone; tell us what you were quoted and you'll get opinions on whether it's reasonable.Quote: Turbo muffler
Can't recommend it, but I'm not the one who's got to live with your car!

Where you live is going to effect the price as well. Bottom line like rent and lights plays into the final price. The shop I've been using would likely come in somewhere in the $350-$500 range depending on details. 2-1/4" is pretty big for the headpipes in a dual setup. It will be tight getting from the engine compartment back under the floor pan. (I have 2-1/4" Duals.) There is a lot of surface area, so coating or wrapping may be needed to knock underhood temperatures down. I chose to wrap the headpipes I built for the Dual Dutra Duals. (New casting front and rear.) 2" dual headpipes may be a better size for the application. Your flowing 3 cylinders through each, so even a noodle pipe size will be adequate for most street builds. (1-7/8".) Velocities will be higher with the smaller pipe, so scavenging will be better. 2¢ CJ |

He quoted $150 for the material...that would include $50 for a muffler, if I chose to buy one from him. Labor....$100-$300. He is semi retired but keeps his doors open 8-4 Mon -Fri. Not Midas He's an old Modesto hot rodder as evidenced by a sweet 60's Ranchero and Ford truck sitting in his shop. There is one other shop I've been told about but.... They primarily do custom Harleys and exhausts for some pricey old rods. I have to say, I'm already biased just knowing that. |

Drive as fast as you can over there, right now, and say yes before he changes his mind and raises his price.

Walker it is. The rebate is $30 for muffler only which gets the price down to $43 shipped. Rebate available through the month of May. |

Got the Valiant back from the exhaust shop today. Here's what I ended up with: 2" head pipes from Dutra front and modified rear, to Y-pipe at the tranny. Collector flange just rear of the Y pipe. Walker 21200. 2 1/4 from y-pipe to the rear bumper. And a shiny chrome round tip. $403.00 total. (with the Walker $30 rebate) I supplied the Y-pipe and the muffler. The guy does nice work. I'm happy! |

That sounds like a really nice setup. Show us some pics -- or even better, make a vidjye and post it to YouTube so we can see it and hear it. |

I paid $450 a few years ago for a 2" pipe, muffler & 2.25" tailpipe. One shop I went to whined about putting in the 2" pipe. The guys I went to said "no problem". |

This guy was a gem. He had the attitude of "Everybody has their opinions and if you ask me I'll give you mine, otherwise I'll do whatever you want" He thought going to the 2" headpipe was a good move (thanks CeeJ). It would have been really tight with 2 1/4. He also thought the Walker 21200 was a bit big. It does get pretty close to the gas tank but his work is solid so I don't expect any movement/vibration. Instead of a slip/slit fit into the y-pipe as DD suggested, he opened up the lower head pipe a bit and slipped the "down" headpipe into it. He says it should not loosen up but if it did for some reason to use a step band clamp The y-pipe starts right at the front edge of the oil pan with a collector flange just aft of the y for disassembly. Definately a deeper sound than stock but not annoying. I wonder if it has anything to do with having about 4 feet of each headpipe? I'll have it up on a rack next week and will get some pics posted. Then I'll learn how to post a vid on you tube for some sound |

Here's a few pics of my set up The change is drastic at freeway speeds. No more labored breathing. There's a slip connection about parallel to the steering shaft where the headpipe tapers down and in. Shouldn't have a leak problem per the plumber. If it ever becomes a problem, a step down band clamp can be put in ![]() Collector flange so I can take the system apart easily. ![]() The Walker 21200 was a tight fit ![]() Gotta have a chromey! ![]() Here's a link to all of myNew Exhaust pics |
