The golf has a dsg transmission. Dsg transmission are known for real quick shifts. But they would also require computer controls so that it could actually shift 1-2-3-4-5-6 instead of 1-3-5. Think of a dsg as 2 computer controlled manual transmissions in 1 case. Every shift it changes which half of the trans is driving the wheel. It is fast because all it is really doing is engaging the clutch on 1 side and disengaging the clutch on the other. |

OK so your statement is one wheel drives then the next gear the other wheel drives. is this correct in my understanding? |

DSG gearboxes have their speed gears on two different shafts rather than having a common main shaft. There is still one input shaft from the engine and one output. In the case of a transaxle the transmission output drives the differential and the two drive axles. |

Those transmissions have 2 concentric clutches. One (A) is for 1-3-5 on it's own mainshaft & the second(B) is 2-4-6-& R on another mainshaft. Both "halves" of the trans connect to the same output shaft. So to drive the computer selects 1 & engages clutch A. As you accelerate the computer selects 2 in preparation for the shift, then it releases clutch A & applies B. (a super fast "shift'\") As you increase mph the computer keeps alternating clutches A & B as it upshifts - A-3, B-4, A-5, B-6. |
