So I leak about a pint a week with my car sitting. It's leaking from the gear selector lever seal, how involved is this fix? I've been looking at going to a manual transmission. Is now the time to do the swap? Thanks for the feed back

Its not that hard to change the seals, but you must remove the valve body to get the shafts out of the way.

Actually there is a special tool that allows the seal change, by just removing the shift and throttle levers. No need to remove the pan and VB. That said, it is extremely tight to use in an "A" body, as the floor is very close to the trans. Maybe check with a local trans shop, and get a quote, and see if their price is low enought, if you don't feel confidant on doing it yourself. As stated it is not hard.

As far as trans repairs go, dropping the VB to change the seal isn't that bad. I'd go that route because there is a smaller 2nd seal for the kickdown shaft that's easier to do once the VB is out. You have to follow the service manual, keep things CLEAN, & use a torque wrench when reassembling. Should be a "minor" repair for a competent shop.

If this isn't your 'cup of tea' (& you are looking for a reason to swap anyway) then by all means - row your own. I would just wait for a "better" reason myself -"cuz I'm lazy that way.
