Post subject: | Distributor Clamp Question |
Hey DI I saw my first "claw" style when I pulled a dizzy off a duster. You say the claw was 79 on up. I'm asking because I have collected a couple elect. Ig. dizzys and wondering what kind of curves they might have. I got one out of a 77 Aspen that has an 8.5 vac pod and no stamp on the mechanical. The one I pulled from the duster...apparently from a later slant with claw...has 15 L on the mech and 15R on the underside of the mech. No stamp on the vac pod. Any ideas what I got? |

Yes it was stock on 1979+ cars, but can be retrofitted to earlier blocks. You say the claw was 79 on up. ? Quote: I got one out of a 77 Aspen that has an 8.5 vac pod and no stamp on the mechanical. ?
Hard to say...usually 8.5's were seen on the 1973-1974 stock EI dizzy, but could have been retrofitted, you'll have to pull it apart so you can see what the mech governor is stamped.Quote: The one I pulled from the duster...apparently from a later slant with claw...has 15 L on the mech and 15R on the underside of the mech. That's a 1973-1974 governor, if there is no stamp on the pod arm, it might be a remanufactured unit then they use a generic pod that is about a 10X. -D.Idiot |

Hi 61 V200. According to the workshop manuals, the #3874876 distributor used on my '77 Aspen, and also at least in '78 and '79 (my manual selection prevents me from giving more years!), used on Federal and Canada engines, have the following data: Centrifugal advance (in distributor degrees at distributor RPM) 0.2° to 2.2° @ 600 1.5° to 3.5° @ 650 3.7° to 5.7° @ 2500 Vacuum advance (distributor degrees at inches of mercury) 0.8° to 2.5° @ 7" 7.3° to 9.8° @ 11.5" Multiply by 2 for crank degrees. Our member bigslant6fan delivers kits with distributor adcance springs for recurving, send him a pm. Different vacuum pods are listed here. Olaf. BTW, '77, '78' and '79 are listed with 12° basic timing setting. |

This is great information on the stock curve...but does not tell him if he has an 9L/9R governor, an 11R governor, or a 13, or a 15....Physical inspection will be necessary for him to determine if the stamp is hidden from view (those of us who've been around can usually tell by looking at the slot whether you have a 9 or a 15, when rotated into view). If it's a junkyard distributor, it's possible some knuckle head could have put the tag on his cardone remanf and then the reference is moot... Per the numbers the '876' should have a 9R governor...the vacc. advance will have the arm stamped with an 11x...which if dialed in more will give a bit more than the stock numbers suggest... Unless you find a pristine OEM distributor, most cores are parts/frankensteins...out of the 25 I have in my garage...only 3 ever came with the stock parts and springs...the rest were remanfs or repaired... Every vacc. pod I've bought for EI distributors in the last few months no matter the brand (SMP, Niehoff, Wells), all have their arm stamped 8.5x...and they all have had the same clearance notch on the arm... which isn't helpful when you wanted a VC-239 and it ends up being a VC-174...after buying 3 of them at the same time... -D.Idiot |

Sorry about that, I just forgot to add the governor number. My '77 Aspen is stamped R9, and if it mean anything, the weights are numbered 1889264. The vacuum pod is marked 11.0R. Olaf. |

I've gone through the distributor off the Aspen and there is nothing on the mech advance....just the 8.5 on the pod. It did have a metal tag (green) on it and the number was 4091101. Rebuilt? The two dizzys I pulled seem to have less bushing wear than the reman I bought. I'd like to use the one out of the Aspen as it has zero side play. I guess it is time to invest in a dial back so I can see what each of the three I have are doing and then pick the most appropriate one. Thanks again |

There was a distributor with tag #4081101 that was used on federal high altitude models, as well as in California. Those engine had 8° static ignition, and 750 rpm idle speed. Mech. advance: 1.0° to 2.0° @ 600 1.7° to 3.7° @ 800 5.8° to 7.8° @ 2060 Vac. advance: 1.0° to 3.0° @ 9" 7.5° to 9.5° @ 12.5" Olaf. |
