Post subject:  Potential 72 d100 slant 6 purchase - couple of questions

Hello,

I'm looking at purchasing a 72 d100 slant 6 pickup with 3 on the tree. He has a good price on it but unfortunately it's not close enough for me to go see it first hand. It's low miles but he mentioned a couple of issues that I'm not really sure what would be involved to fix.

1) He said that the exhuast manifold needs a new donut and/or gaskets
2) On the transmission he said it chatters a little when engaging the clutch in first gear at low rpms but 2nd and 3rd are quiet and that he can rev it up a little and the clutch does not chatter. He mentioned it could use a new clutch, but there is no slipping at all.

He mentioned the best solution might be an A833 4 on the floor, unless one wants to keep it bone stock and that it should cost less than a used 3 speed since there are probably more of them out there in boneyards.

I just wondered what your thoughts were on the transmission. Does it sound like a simple fix or something pretty major.

Thanks in advance!

I ended up resurfacing flywheel and new clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing to get rid of chatter...not a big deal

Clutch chatter means it probably needs a pilot bushing. My old '83 had the same issue. It also had worn splines on the input shaft. I drove it that way for a couple years as a daily driver.

Exhaust leaks on /6 are common, but could be from several areas.
1)exh manifold is cracked, near the center
2)exh manifold to cyl head or exh to intake gasket failed
3)exh man to exh pipe flange gskt failed

# 3 is the easiest to fix while replacing the manifold or the other gaskets requires moderate "nuts & bolts" skills, lots of penetrant, & paitience. If the manifold is warped you need to have it machined flat in order to seal properly.

clutch chatter taking off in first is usually a bad disc. The disc lining could be overheated & glazed, or could be slightly contaminated with oil. The fix is replace all the "wear" parts for the clutch (disc, throwout bearing, press plate, & pilot bearing) & also have the flywheel cut. Make sure the trans front & eng rear seals don't leak. Also check for worn eng mounts.

Wow! Thanks for the great tips guys! Both of the problems don't sound too major, which is good for someone like me.

I'd like to get the truck but it looks like getting it from Pennsylvania to Missouri would be too expensive with today's gas prices.

Thanks again for the help!
