| Post subject: | Starter Switch? |
I have this weird problem that was intermittent, but now seems to be a feature. I have a '66 Dart SL6 that when you turn the key to start it, you get nothing, not even the solenoid click. So, with the key off I hotwire it (wire from + side of coil to + side of battery, then screw driver across starter relay, it starts, turn on key to run position, take wire off coil & battery) and then drive away. It used to be random but now it's permanent. Do I need a new starter switch at the key? Have I just worn out that starting contact, but not the run position contact? Thank you. |

Yup, you need a new ignition/starter switch. |

Thanks Dan. I've seen so much of your advice over the years, it seems like I know you. |

Heh. Glad to help. BTW, until you replace the switch, you don't need to run a jumper from the battery to the coil -- just turn the key to "on" and arc the starter with a screwdriver and the engine will start. |

| Post subject: | Hot Starter |
While you there Dan, my other Dart (360V8) periodically won't start after you've driven a while (once when cold). You get the solenoid "click" most of the time, but that's it. I first checked the battery terminals, but the connections were solid and fresh. If I come back in a half hour, it starts. Is that the classic Mopar "hot starter" syndrome? I've heard that the lightweight high-torque mini starters solve this problem. Do you have any experience with this problem, or those mini-starters? |

Yup, probably a hot starter shorting out on that V8 application. Mini starter thoughts are here. But be sure to check your positive battery cable! |
