| Post subject: | about block numbers and the story of my engine |
hi! im a dude from finland and ive had a 75 dart with a 225 sl6 for a couple of years now and the cars been a lot of fun, its been my daily driver all year around (from almost 100 degrees in the summer to -35 in the winter) but the plucky little engine is coming to the end of its natural life and is badly starting to require maintenance. -pretty much has to be pulled out and disassembled as the head gasket is in bits and leaks both ways badly and theres another major leak near inbetween of tranny and engine, more than likely from end of the crank :/ and hold on the story goes on -Around here just about everyone who owns a dart/valiant has the tendency to toss out the original engine once it fails or otherwise begins to wear out... darts/valiants usually get their replacement engines (both 318 and sl6) from trashed aspens which there were more than plenty of back in the day. Now I dont know wether this has been done to my car by an earlier owner or not, or if the engine actually is the original but just supersixed at some point. So, are there any major differences between internal components of engines made on and after 75 (or any other major differences)? Im gonna be working on this with my dad and neither of us have ever dealt with slants before Just thought I should ask you guys what these numbers could possibly tell before ordering new parts: block driver side - 330-3 3129 AAWJ block passenger side - 3129 top of the head - 2959 4104382 |

Hi Mackie, welcome aboard. Generally speaking all Slant six engines will fit your car, excepting an oil pan change if you get an engine out of a truck, early A body, and other miscellaneous donors. Early engines up to 67 have small crank and need to mate to small crank transmission, or an adaptor fitted or special torque converter needs to be employed to be able to mate the two. Swapping from slant 6 to V8 will require special adapter motor mounts depending on which V8 is used. Look here for decoding Chrysler casting numbers, and other such things. Bill |

Bill - Not plannin on swapping to a v8 cause im pretty pleased with how well the slant seems to work in fairly extreme conditions Dont much like the idea of buying a used replacement engine either; dont want buy a pig in a bag. I'd rather spend the equivelant amount of money on spare parts and repair what ive got so that ill least have a familiar enemy instead of an uknown one |

From your casting numbers, looks like a later cast crank 225 SL6. Look for the numbers stamped into the top of the block, that will give us more info. DD

i found some numbers but they were so badly worn, in the lack of a better term, that i couldnt really decipher what was originally written :/ all i could make out (although barely) from another spot on the top of the block was 0255R 1112. [edit] and oh yeah, the crank appears to be cast iron so I guess that means this is post 1976? and heres a silly question; what is the standard connecting rod bearing size? in both inches and millimeters if possible I tried googling that and searching for the info on the forums here and couple of other places but so far no luck whatsoever. -Im about to order bunch of stuff I need from rockauto and thats the last missing piece of information I need.... |
