Post subject:  dwell issues

i just replaced my distributor after discovering the internals had all turned almost completely into rust. i have a stock 1965 dodge dart wagon with a totally stock 225. when i put the new distributor in and set the timing to the right spot it almost immediately revved up to about 1500 rpm and misfired like mad. i have the point gap set to spec from the shop manual and am wondering what else could be causing this, bad coil? el-cheapo points?

Timing may be off several degrees, big vacuum leak, stuck high idle mechanism on carburetor, or curb idle adjustment screwed in too far could be causing high idle. Bad plug wire, crossed plug wire, fouled sparkplug, or poorly adjusted valve lash could be causing miss-fire.

Did you set the timing with a timing light? Or did you just install the new distributer in the same position as the old one? It sounds like the timing is way too far advanced. How many degrees is the timing? You must set the initial timing with a timing light, and the vacuum advance hose disconnected and plugged.

i set the timing with a timing light with the vacuum advance disconnected. and i set the valve lash about a month ago don't think it could be to far off already. i know the carb is on its last legs but it was working marginally ok before the swap. ill check the idle mixture and the plugs and wires and re-check the timing. I also swapped to the coil off my old 273 v8 and that took care of the missfires, the coil i had had a massive dent in it.

Install electronic ignition and be done with breaker points, dwell variation, and constantly-deteriorating engine state of tune forever.
