Post subject:  engine recommendation

the used slant i put in my 40 plymee is tired, uses a lot of oil/\, want to build a new one for it. problem is, that i have three.
wanting some recommendations as to which would be best for my application. this is not going to be a race engine, but just a streetrod driver, but i want to do it right. am running a 4 bbl,(500 cfm) and mopar purple cam now.
i have a mid 70's 198
a 1966 225
a 81 225 truck engine (hydraUlic cam i think)
any ideas on which engine would be the best build would be appreciated.
i'm not looking at over 5000 rpm, and want more for bottom end torque as opposed to top end horsepower. some say the cast crank is lighter? might be better.
thanks for any input.

I would go for the 66 engine. Its a 225 and a mech cam. What year tranny are you using?

What year is the engine in the '40 and what transmission do you have? If it's a '68+ auto trans it won;t work behind the '66 engine as the '66 has a smaller crank pocket for the torque converter. If you're using a manual trans you just need the right flywheel. If all you want it a quiet, reliable cruiser I'd use the '81 engine and have a custom hydraulic cam (re)ground. In any case I would mill the block and head to get the compression ratio up a little. Most stock 225s check at 8:1 or less. I also really like a little head porting and bigger valves. Works great even with stock cams so long as the intake and exhaust flow well.

the 66 engine is what is in it now. i have a a833 4 sapeed overdrive behind it. the combo works real well. i bought the engine used, it was out of a bracket racer, but the guy i bought it from, knew nothing about it as he bought the car and yanked the engine to put in a v-8. didn't pay much for it, the compression checked at 145 -125, so i took a chance on it. runs great, but sucks oil.
i would rather build one of the other motors as i don't want the car laid up. i'm really leaning to the 81 truck engine, as i really don't need the forged crank and mech lifters for my application.
what you think?

The '81 engine will be fine. You just need the '68+ flywheel with the larger center hole and maybe a pilot bushing. The hydraulic motors are fine I just don't like the super mild cam and they all need a compression ratio boost.

dido on the mild cam. i've been a high horsepoqer rodder for 40 years.
might have a problem with a too mild cam. , but i don't want to hurt my bottom end, as this is a street car, and the first 60 feet or so is what counts. comp cams doesn't make a thumper series for the slant. what cam specs do you like?

the low 1st gear combined with the 3:50 8 3/4 rear should make gor a decent launch if i don't over cam it.
