Hey guys
Soo I did the hei ignition conversion. After a few dumb mistakes(not grounding the module and forgetting the curb idle screw was all the way in to prevent it from dieing, that's another story). Anyways she purrrs like a kitten.... To an extent. After long periods of idle, maybe a couple minutes she'll start to kinda surge I tap the throttle past 1k and she's fine. Didn't replace my carb cuz it had a ported spark tube and I've been lookin for a super six. Is it just the carb? I'll post some pics of my ignition setup when I get the pictures on my computer. Runs much better, feel a difference in power and starts so much easier. Just the little idle problem is all.

Any suggestions?
Thanks
Cody

Check for vacuum leaks and possibly the HEI module being mounted in a place where it gets too hot.

It's probably a vaccum leak then. I have a picture of my setup on the hei disscussion thread. The heat sink is out of a computer and is overkill but hey it works. I'll look at it tomorrow. I'll be putting the 1" carb spacer in (my dad had it laying in his garage). I'm just happy I did the conversion and it actually works. Lol

Oh also reed the one plug I pulled out had kind of a rust color to it, it rubbed of, kinda powdery. I know it's running rich again. Is that just from being rich?

Rust color might just be gasoline additives. Normal color is a light tan.

I did use an octane booster a couple fillups. It definatley improved performance.

Octane booster does not improve performance.

Sorry A little more oomph. according to the seat of my pants.

Still no. The octane boost is only to raise the octane of the gas and cut down on spark knock/preignition.

Sorry Ross.../Dan and Wizard is right. Higher octane helps stop knock, so spending all that extra money on 93 octane is a waste of money unless needed. With a high compression motor, 12 or 13 to 1, or higher, pump gas sometimes needs extra octane to run properly. Ethel is no longer available so we add octane boost to help keep the motor running smooth.

I just bought an octane booster. Which was like $4. There's no way in hell I'd fill up on premium. $3.85 for regular is bad enough! Quick question, could a dirty fuel filter cause the surging? I replaced it in January. But I've filled up quite a few times since then, the previous owner didn't use it much, I'm wondering if filling up so much has washed gunk out of the tank and into the filter?!
