Post subject:  Harmonic Balancer Removal?

Hello all,

I made an attempt to remove my harmonic balancer, but ran into a snag when I wasted my Taiwanese made duck foot. :( I attempted to take the balancer assembly off with the power steering pulley still on but unbolted (duck foot bolted through those holes). Was this were I went wrong??? Or was the balancer just so frozen I bent the crap out of my tool? Or is there a bolt in the center that needs to be loosened?

Need to know tonight so I can get another remover tom morning and finish up right before my weekend is up. Thanks in advance!!!

Looks like the right designed tool (might use better quality), not sure why the tool didn't pull it off. Picture shows no bolt in crankshaft.

Yes, there's a crank bolt in the center, but like Fopar says, it isn't there in your pic. Try squirting plenty of penetrating oil in the center section between the crank snout and the dampher hub, and let it soak for a while, and take off the pully first. Much easier that way. Sometimes you need to put a socket or something on top of the crack snout to give the puller something to push on. Never seen a good puller bend like that. Get a better one. Another thing I sometimes do when a dampher is tight is to put good tension on the puller and then tap on the center section (only) of the dampher with a hammer. That will sometimes break it free, but use that as a last resort.

Sprayed a bunch of oil in the center. There is no bolt or relief of any kind in the center. $12.25 at Napa for the remover. I guess I should have spent $19.99 at Oreilly's??? That's what I'll try tomorrow. I figured even the cheapest tool would be worth a single pull.. 87' D150 with 108K.

Whatever u do don't us a two it three jaw puller it will pull the outer pulley off I just had a brain fart this week and tried to use a two jaw puller
So needless to say I had to drop $122 for a new harmonic balancer its for a turbo build so I decided to go with a powerbond that why it was so expensive
Just some of my mishaps

Naw, there ain't. The crank snout is tapped (¾-16) but most slant-6s did not have a bolt in this location. None is required to hold the damper on; it's an interference fit.

Dan, my engine (from a 77 Aspen SW) had a crank bolt.

So buy a new tool and try, try again?

I used a three prong puller but made sure that the center bolt made contact so that the holder was very close to the balancer. It took a bit to "unfreeze" it but it eventually came off. It also was not a very expensive puller.

I have never seen a stock slant six with the crank snout bolt, but I always install one since it helps put the crank dampener back on. I just get mine of of v-8s in the boneyard. I have several spares in my garage (somewhere).

You are using the right type of tool, but you need a higher quality version.

Well yea, all damphers that I've seen, Mopar and others, have interference fit, but many also have crank bolts. My '64 S/6 had one, as did my '73.

Got the balancer off. Piece of cake with an american made balancer for $32.99.. I guess you get what you pay for. Now I just have to buy a quality installing tool as well..

Crank bolt is a 1.5" correct???

Timing chain is super shot. How would I go about ensuring crank and cam are timed up correctly? Can't really trust lining up dots.. chain looked like it might have even skipped a tooth. I have a TDC locater and degree wheel.

By crank bolt I meant a keyed socket to turn the motor by hand***

The dampener should slide onto the crank snout far enough to let you use it turn the motor over. Just don't slide it on so far that it gets stuck.
