It depends on a lot of things, as to what will be needed.

Was it stored out side or inside?
What kinda shape was it in when it was parked?
Did it get started any when parked?

There are many more question that coudl be ask, but in the end it depends on the car.

Things I would do.

1 - Chang the oil and filter
2 - Remove gas tank and drain any gas and clean if needed.
3 - Change fuel filter, and all fuel line rubbber hoses.
4 - Remove spark plugs and squirt trans fluild down in the cylinders, then let set for a couple days..
5 - Turn engine over with spark plugs left out. After a few crank overs then reinstall plugs.
6- Check radiator for rust and fliuds. If it has antyfreeze just leave it for now, if its dry fill with water and check for leaks
7 - remove the thermostat, it will probably stick and needs a new one later, but using no stat for now will be OK.

Now its time to start it and see whats left of the setting engine. It may be OK, it may not you just have to try it and see. Also make sure the tranny has fluid in it before trying to start.

Chances are the engine will be as good as it was when it was parked, but it could be worse depending on many things like moisture and if they did start it every now and then.

The biggest chances of problems is the cylinder walls rusting up and the pistons getting stuck, or a valve sticking. This is way you squirt oil down in the cylinder and then try to turn it over by hand before using the starter.

Next the fuel system getting rusted up and then it will stop up after a bit when you do start it. Plus if its got old gas in the tank it will be rough on the engine also. If nothing else take the fuel line that feeds the fuel off and add a long hose from the fuel pump inlet to a hand help gas tank like you will get gas for your lawnmower in. This would work for a test run and the fuel system could be serviced later after you find out if engine is ok or not.
