Post subject:  Here we go again. Its acting up worse this time.

Well, just starting yesterday it started flooding itself out again. It had done it before a couple months ago and it corrected itself. This time it is alot worse. I can only start the car for a couple minutes, and it will flood itself. When I finally do get it started and running, it is a really LOW idle, and when driving it has no power what-so-ever. It also started smoking today, and the oil light comes on when the gas pedal is not pushed down. It is my 73 dart, 225 auto, 1 barrel carb. All stock.
Anyone know what could be happening? PLEASE HELP ME, it is my only car and I need it for school!

Float level set wrong, float sinking, fuel inlet valve not sealing.

Why do you need a car to get to school?

Right now right now right now check the fuel pump. Sounds like to me exactly what my 71 dart did before I started its rebuild. When these mechanical fuel pumps fail, it will cause fuel to flow into the overflow (which runs via hose and dumps it back into the intake manifold. It also leaks fuel into the engine block itself, which will cause fluid levels to increase, seal pressures to increase, thinner oil leads to you know what.

My 2 cents.

I have never done anything to the carb, but it was running perfectly fine. So i dont think the float is set wrong. May be sinking though.

Im not sure what my curb idle is, I dont have a tach. It was one of the next things on the list to get.

How do I check the fuel pump, If i press the pedal, you can see fuel coming into the carb with the air cleaner off.

Um…no. I'm not sure what "overflow" you think you're describing — maybe the carburetor bowl vent? — but a failing fuel pump stops pumping fuel. There is no failure mode on a mechanical fuel pump that causes it to pump too much fuel into the carburetor. That doesn't (can't) happen; you did not see what you seem to think you saw.

A fuel pump with a ruptured diaphragm will dilute the engine oil with gasoline, which will raise the level in the crankcase and thin down the oil, but it will not cause "seal pressures" to increase.

Float is almost certainly too heavy; replace with new (Walker #100-14) and put a good quality carb kit in (I like the ones from www.daytonaparts.com , but since you are in a hurry you may need to settle for whatever the local parts store can get for you).

I got a repair kit, but havent had time to put it on.
It is KEM #15519A, but it doesnt have a float with it.
Where do I find the Walker #100-14, I cant seem to find it online anywhere.

I cant imagine an excess of any fluid in a space designed for a certain amount of fluid regardless of its viscosity to not create excess pressure at the container's weakest points.

You seem not to have a clear mental picture of how and where pressure is generated in an engine's lubrication system. The pressure is not generated by the volume of oil in the crankcase, it's generated within the oil galleries (not within the crankcase at large) by the oil pump. Thinner oil (e.g., diluted by gasoline) reduces oil pressure, it does not increase it.

Thanks for giving me the site. I cant believe they are $50. I will have to mow some lawns before I get to order it.

I went out earlier and started it up, and it ran perfectly fine. We will see in the morning when I get up to go to school if its still running good. Hopefully. But I dont really want to drive it, so I dont take a chance on messing anything up.

Well today it ran like 90 year old legless man. I got it running long enough to move it into the back yard, and that is where its staying until I figure some more things out with it. May be buying this kit to redo gaskets ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... MEWAX%3AIT )
what do you guys think of it. Will it be fine to just freshen up the motor some. Hopefully get it back up and running. So i can go to some shows and cruise ins this summer.
