I was reading a old slant six news magazine over the weekend and it showed a picture of a front and rear alloy finned brake drums used for the daytona races the valiants were in. I can find info on the 70's finned drums but not any info on these early 60's ones. Any places anyone knows of that I can read up more on these ?

Cheers

Those were almost certainly Buick drums which were adapted to fit.

Some editions of the factory parts books for the early cars list P/Ns for iron and for steel-in-aluminum brake drums. These P/Ns disappeared by '63 and if such an item has surfaced, live and in the metal, any time in the last three and a half decades I'd be quite surprised.

I am pretty sure those aluminum drums were never availalbe except on the cars prepared for the Daytona race. You can see pictures of them in old magazines. Richard Petty had a set on the front of his 43JR Barracuda drag car in 1965. They were 9" drums and fit inside of the 13" wheels used in those days.

I donno…factory P/Ns listed the way they are suggest to me that at least they were available over the parts counter, and might've been installed ex-factory on some cars. Next time I'm in the vicinity of those particular FPCs I'll scan and post the relevant pages.

Could those aluminum drums been a dealer installed accessory in addition to the Hyper Pack upgrade?

No. Not the way they're listed. They appear to be regular production parts, possibly installed only at the Los Angeles plant. They are listed as "Steel encased" drums.

Looking further (try a Google search on "Steel encased" brake drum) I might've ASSumed the items listed in the FPC are aluminum when in fact they may be iron with a steel wear surface. I've never knowingly seen one, so can't be sure.

I've read a detailed writeup on the Daytona Valiants and while it's been a lot of years since I lay hands on it (think I know where it is, won't have access til mid July at least), I do have a vague recollection of finned aluminum drums being mentioned. Those would almost certainly have been special race-only items not listed in any parts catalogue. I don't know what rules would've applied to the brakes on the car, but I strongly suspect the "stock" (i.e., parts homologated as "stock" by making some particular quantity generally available) requirements for the powertrain did not apply to the brakes. This article mentions finned aluminum steel-encased drums, and also mentions 13" × 5½" wheels. Not only does that put a vote in favour of the "stock" requirements not applying to non-powertrain components, but it also suggests the Daytona Valiants' brake drums were 9" diameter -- the 13" wheels' webbing was not modified to clear 10" drums til '64, though of course the wheels might have been less production-based than I am assuming with this remark. But the Buick finned aluminum drums were 12" diameter and definitely would not have fit within any 13" wheel.

In an issue of 'Sports Car Illustrated" there was a write up called 'SCI drives the racing Valiant'. It mentions " finned aluminum drums with cast iron liners can be ordered with any of the three lining choices" and just before that it says ... " wide-base 5.5 by 13 wheels are on the Hyper Pack cars". The write up had images of the number 8 Marvin Panch car and talks about other aspects of the Daytona Valiants including dual point dizzies, oil coolers and higher pressure fuel pumps.

Below is the picture that I mentioned that was in the Slant Six news magazine of the finned alloy drums.

I was wondering if anyone had a image of what these drums looked like on the outer side.

Cheers
