Post subject: | Magnum 500 Wheel Question |
Is there a difference between Mopar Magnum 500/Road wheels and Ford Magnums? I picked up a set of used 14"x 7" Magnum 500's and found that they will not fit on the back of my "79 Aspen. The hub register is too large. Not by much, but enough that the wheel will not rest against the brake drum. I didn't try them on the front. I always thought that the centers of those wheels were pretty much the same. Do the Mopar wheels have a larger center? |

Yes, Chrysler wheels have a larger center register than Fords. The Magnum 500s in the aftermarket usually aren't hub centric from what little I've seen. I don't think OE Chrysler Magnum 500s were hub centric either. I don't have one here to check, but a friend does if you really need to know. |

It just kind of surprised me, because I would have thought that the center portions of those wheels would all be the same. I was thinking of ordering a set of 15" aftermarket ones all chrome, now I'd be concerned that they might not fit either. Might just stick with my Chrysler Rallyes - they are hub centric. I'll have to check these wheels again, curious to see if I can find a Ford stamp on them. They came with "Magnum 500" center caps, so they could be aftermarket. |

interesting.... The thing is, if I hadn't test fitted them without the center caps, I might not have noticed the fit problem. I could have just cranked the lug nuts tight and "forced" them on. I'm sure there are some out there who may have done this without realizing it , only to have vibrations down the road - not to mention serious safety concerns. I did a little reading on some Mustang forums and it appears that the Magnum 500's can have some issues. Because they were such a common wheel and offered as a factory option on Mopars, I never imagined they could be so "fussy". The whole hub centric, lug centric thing was news to me. I hadn't given it a whole lot of thought before. |

These were off of a 70 torino, I don't know if older ones are slightly different, but apparently since you have a problem they ALL must be exactly the same way If it were a fitment issue like that on mine the inspection station would have caught it and made me bring in other wheels the 2 times it has been inspected. |
