Post subject:  Ordered Standard/Bluestreak Cap & am Confused by what I
Hey everybody. I'm curious about the cap I received. I ordered all Standard/Bluestreak parts for my HEI retrofit coming up. The module and coil check out... they came in red and white boxes that said Standard as do the parts themselves. My cap however, is in a box called MITECH IGNITION and says it was made in Canada. Nowhere on the actual part is there a stamp of who made it.

Was I sent the wrong cap? It seems of good quality.

OH, another question I've always wondered. What is the purpose of the cap/plug that extends out the top of the cap by the #1 cylinder nipple?

Mitech make good stuff. What color is the cap, and are the metal inserts aluminum, brass, or copper?

(You should've got the NAPA Echlin MO-3000 rotor, not any other)

The cap is black and the inserts appear to be aluminum. It seems to be well made... more of a heavier composite material than the sheer plastic you get with BWD or other chain caps.

As for rotor, I will be getting the Echlin rotor.

For the vent, is it operational as is or are you supposed to remove the cover from it? Never had a car with one before.


One more thing. I have heard a lot about Magnecor, and looked them up. Living about 5 miles from their home base, I went there to get some 8mm custom wires (i.e., a coil wire customized for the Mark VII et al coil that I have. I figured since I have a Mark IV in the garage, I could at least keep it in the family). I was amazed that it was dead quiet and there was only one person there. He talked with me about my order, came to look at what the coil arrangement would be an 3 hours later I picked up the wires. It was not a store at all. It was simply an office building with a shop in the back and a couple offices in the front. Not at all what I was expecting based on what I have heard about them. BUT, I have no doubt my $56 was well spent.

Nope...not what you want. Keep trying. A Standard CH-410 should be blue with copper inserts these days, though there will be some old-stock black/aluminum CH-410s left in stock, so be choosy.

Nope, leave it alone. That cap is to keep water from getting in; it lets vapor and hot air out.

Magnecor is indeed a quality operation.

The blue caps with copper inserts were under the CH-410X part number which is no longer available...all the CH-410's I've gotten in the last few months are black with silver/aluminum inserts...

According to a couple places in town their parts supplier now defers the CH-410X query to the CH-410 number...

Standard's official product reshuffle plan/policy is to delete the "X" numbers, move the blue-with-copper-or-brass good stuff to be the regular Standard number with no suffix, and move the value-line junk to their "Tru-Tech" line with the "T" suffix (such as "CH-410T"). This and the info about there still being black-with-aluminum parts in the no-suffix boxes comes directly from my go-to guy at Standard. He advised that the new stock (blue good stuff in non-X boxes) will flush through into the retail market at varying speed depending on the popularity of the specific item in question. A CH-411 (no suffix) I bought recently for my 3.0 '91 Spirit is blue with copper. Slant-6 caps don't move as quickly as 3.0 caps these days. You will also notice that the "Made In USA" moulded lettering on the blue parts has been blanked off. It's because they're now made in Mexico. Okeh, that is somewhat annoying, but Mexico has a good, knowledgeable, capable plastics-moulding industry and it's a damn sight better than China!

FWIW, the CH-411 came in a newly-updated red box that bore large "Standard" and small "Blue Streak" branding. No idea what their long-term brand identity plan is, but it surely seems foolish to discard such a good and widely-recognized brand as "Blue Streak" -- which has such a long history:

I was in a hurry for one,but Napa and Autozone both have the black caps with aluminum contacts.If my memory serves me right-I remember years ago when the blue cap had the brass contacts and ridges cast into it to keep flashing over to a minium-for some reason I remember using a FORD cap on mopars just for that reason.But havent had the time to reseach it out again.

I can't remember ever noticing a difference between how different caps/rotors have run on my cars. Yes, that is seat of the pants and on dragstrips, with some back-to-back runs. I have run every kind of cap you can imagine, BUT I have not bought any in the last 5-7 yrs, so new ones could be worse. I suspect the MITECH will work just fine for many years.

I also just bought what looks like a genuine, USA-made NOS CH-410X on fleabay.... getting it posted here to New Zealand ($9.99 for the cap & $6.50 for the 7000 mile postage = bargain).

I'm hoping that with the MO-3000 rotor and HEI this cap will last me a long time.... is this a realistic expectation if I'm running the HEI set-up?

Well, debate aside, I contacted RockAuto and they are sending me another one. They even told me they didn't need the one I got back. I guess it can't hurt for a backup. Also got the proper MO3000 today along with the relay and connector plug. Also got the Delco heatsink for $13 and the coil connector. Think I'm about all set except for the 1/4 and 3/16 connectors.

Looking forward to a productive Father's Day!
