Post subject:  Electrical wire

This will sound silly to people with the answers, but a question about wire. How big is the distinction between a standard 14 AWG speaker wire and the same electrical wiring? For example, would this be adequate for power and coil wires:

I should add that this question is in regards to the HEI retrofit.

The difference is in the insulation and strands. Speaker wire generally has more strands and is more flexible then automotive grade power wire. But it's insulation probably won't stand up to as much heat because it wasn't made to run under-hood. If your careful where you run it (away from exhaust, head, radiator, etc), it should hold up fine.

If your not satisfied with what you have available locally and have to mail order, I suggest marine grade wiring such as what is found here. In the smaller gauges it's about as flexible as automotive wire and has the advantage of being tinned (solder coated, not bare copper - makes it corrosion resistant which is especially important in salt water environments).

You can get like a 20ft roll of auto wire from orielly's for I think around $6. I had some rolls of wire in my garage when I moved in that were 14ga and oil/gas resistant. I've used almost all of it on my truck with no problems at all. Even used it for some driving and back up lights and my ignition so it holds up to heat good.
