I have a 1977 Volare SW, and i had an engine out of a 1976 Volare SW in it, it got hurrible gas milage and sounded like a burnt valve, but it could make it to 100 after 2 miles, it had 9 mpg, and couldnt spin the tires.

so i replaced the engine out of a 1975 Valiant and its about the same, i just go to get it timed, but i think it accelerates crappy and will get to 100 also, it doenst have that burnt valve sound and i dont smell gas. i still have to time it better and i think it might have some umph to it.

well, if you really want some oomph then i'd go for a supersix intake manifold with a carter bbd if you dont already have, between this and the 1bbl its like night and day, the main trick for gas milage is to have it tuned right and keep your foot outta the pedal, also i'd adjust your timing to 12degreese BTDC if you already havnt, this will give you more oomph and gas milage.

Sounds like the car has a super "tall" (low number) rear end gear ratio. Take a look for the ratio number on a tag or stamped onto the gears themselves could be a 2.76 or 2.45 which would explain way it gets good top speed but has crappy "around town" performance.

Just Raced a 1986 Toyata Corralla with the F4 engine and Carb....And well surprizing my car won....it was great, we were going over 115 mph, i out accelerated him slowly but enough to get in front and it was fun going 115 + because his speedo only goes to 110 than pegs and he said his was pegged and mine pegs and took 10 seconds after i let off the gas to actually stop pegging. So my car is running great but could be better if i could get a super six intake.

Did you ever find-out what rear end gear ratio is in the car?
Most don't realize that a Slant with tall gearing can be a real "blast" on the open road.
Here a story...
I once got "hooked-up" with a Datsun 280 Z car out on a long piece of open highway. I saw him get around some traffic behind me, so I had already down shifted and floored the 1bbl by the time he got up along side. Took The SL6 Dart up to 100 mph or so then shifted back to 4th, did a "double clutch" shift so he would hear it. We started to creep away as the speedo pegged. The guy in the Z car backed-off and dropped in behind us! :o

I had 2.76 gears in the rearend at the time and the car would drive floored at 100+ speeds all day long. (If you had to let-off for traffic it took a while to get back up to that speed but it would carry 100+ pretty good once you were there.) We talked with the Z car driver at a rest stop miles later, he made me open the hood cause he thought we had a small block in the car.
He went into "Does not compute" mode as soon as he saw the 1bbl SL6
