The current-production pan is deeper than the ones that came standard when slant-6 vehicles were being built. Assuming you're building a 904, pan is p/n 52118 779AB, and they even include a spiffy magnet to catch metallic shavings. Also get the really nice double-seal, reusable rigid pan gasket P/N 4295 875AC.

There are aftermarket pans that are +2 quarts. Check here for both the MP stamped unit and cast ones. Good plus is the drain plug too. I second the nice gasket Dan mentioned.

looks like the stamp steel one is 1 quart
the cast aluminium is 2 quarts or larger..I found a TCI cast aluminum 2 quart unit for $83 delivered..anyone ever had issues with TCI ?

also on some jeep 4x4 forums they talk about installing a temp sending unit in the corner of the pan...is that just for 4x4 app. or do Drag racers do that too?

That is a steal for the TCI pan. Stock stamped ones I've seen give the same extra cap as TCI - 2 qts.

One of the deep pans I have is a stock pan off an A-500 or some derivative thereof. IIRC, it's a truck pan.

I'm curious. What problem are you seeking to correct with the increased fluid capacity?

no problems
but I have always like extra capacity in the transmission for racing.
heat will kill an auto trans prematurely.
on hauling packages on trucks they have a trans cooler
and I do have a tow hitch..ha!

I know about transmission coolers, but that's not what we're talking about. Two quarts more fluid will only slow the increase in fluid temperature slightly which is one reason why I was asking. Deep pans are really of best use when the fluid pickup becomes troublesome on high G launches.

well I do drag race more then drive on the street. I guess most deep pans were for OD trans/work vehicles/4x4's
I always ran a deeper pan for the strip..probably old sckool peeps influence me. here's some nice pans for various apps.

The reason you see jeepers talking about the trans temp gauge install is kinda two fold. First, is the obvious. Slow crawling in 4WD can increase trans temps a bunch. Then there's the problem with the 42RLE in the new Wranglers that Chrysler does NOT want to address. A lot of these new Jeeps have burned. The cause has been narrowed down to trans fluid overheating, boiling out of the dipstick tube onto the exhaust manifold and causing a fire. The resulting fire takes out nearby fuel lines and the rest is history. I had an 08 Wrangler and one of the first things I did was install a hardlined cooler in line with the factory one. If you run an extra capacity pan, I would not think a fluid temp gauge would be necessary, but it couldn't hurt I suppose.

While you got the pan off, check the line pressure adjustment. See my post on page 2 "shift kit, worth it?"
