I have a torqueflite (904) and it is a 64 or a 65, as far as I understand the shifting cables are different for a 64 and a 65 (console) so I would like to know the year of the tranny, any ideas on how to figure out if it is a 64 or 65, I do not have much of the tranny id, most of it is unreadable. It starts with ?4?6? and ends with 159 1689. Is there any other way except using the ID to figure it out ? |

AFAIK, the difference from 64 to 65 was just the shifter, from push button to column shift. The 2-cable (904) trans wasn't changed (anyone please correct me if I'm wrong). The 727 went from ball & trunion to slip yoke U-joint, & all 66 went to single lever linkage. |

Valve body differences between lever-shift and button-shift twin-cable transmissions. You can swap the complete valve body to convert one to the other, or if you know what you're doing you can swap just the necessary pieces.

So to find-out which one you have, either pull-off the pan and look at the comb or grab the cable shift "sleeve" and carefully push / pull it and count the clicks. The 60-64 will have R, N, D, 2, 1 = 5 Clicks and the 65 will have 6. (PRND21) DD |

Ok, thanks, it was a 65 So a 64 shift cable will fit a 65 tranny ? (with the exception of different length). |
