Post subject: | Engine cutting out whenever it wants |
My car has a mind of it's own, want to go to work? Sure, want to leave work? Nope. It seems like the hotter outside it is the higher my chance of the engine cutting out. I checked spark when I was stranded on the side of the highway and it wasn't getting any, waited about 20 minutes and it had spark, also the motor seems to be running SUPER hot, so I'm wondering if it's the coil on it's way out the door? Or the engine? It will some times sputter on and off, like cut out for 2 seconds and then kick back on, until it eventually wins and dies. And then I can't get it to start for a while and when it finally kicks over it let's out a cloud of white smoke. Plugs are dark brown sooty colored also by the way. Thanks, Seth |

My first thought would be coil, then control module, then distributor drive gear. |

Alright, is there a way to test the coil? For failure under heat? |

Swap in a known good coil. Alternatively, try heat it with a heat gun(hair dryer might work). |

What about the ballast resistor? I think I remember reading about the same sort of thing somewhere else, it wouldn't start when warm, let it sit and it starts. Could that be it reed? You should do the hei! You saw my set up, pretty easy and mine cost barely over $100. That's why mine starts up so easy... when it gets fuel ![]() Good luck Cody |

Usually when a ballast resistor fails the motor won't run at all. |

Except when cranking over the engine. Engine will fire off until key is released than it quits. That is symptomatic of bad Ballast resistor. I would put my money on a failing heat sensitive coil. To test a coil look here. |

I'm still having a similar problem! I also have rough idle but only sometimes when at red lights... it cuts out mostly when I pull into work ![]() |

Well, I picked up a mechanical temperure gauge for $20, hoping to fix the dash one at some point. Also got a premium napa coil (echlin ic12) and a 195* t-stat and gasket, $42.42, just waiting for the rain to stop, and if it doesn't then I'm going out in the rain ![]() |

You know, if you live in the Pacific Northwest and wait for the rain to stop before you go outside and do things, you will never go outside and do things... |

Remember:Test first, replace second if needed. Don’t spend money that doesn’t need to be spent by just swapping parts. |

The coil was bad, along with the t-stat. It runs way better now, it no longer has a lope to it at idle, nice and smooth. I do need a new radiator now, mine is cracked in the top in a bunch of spots about 2 inches apart and about an inch long across the entire top. |

Yeah, how about this wonderful summer weather today ![]() There for a while, I couldn't drive my car in the rain because it leaked water into the cabin. I couldn't drive it if it was warmer than 60 degrees outside because I had cooling issues. That left about 8 days a year I could actually enjoy my car. ![]() |

So I have the temperure probe in the top of the radiator and after a 20 minute drive at 60+mph it was 220*, is this about normal or is this a little high? |

That's high. Engine outlet temp should be within about 10° of the thermostat temperature. |
