Slant Six Forum :: Front marker flash option

Hey all,
I'm sure that some of you already know this, but there's probably someone else like me who didn't. While looking for a way to get my front side marker lights to flash as turn signals (ala Daniel Stern's tech article), I discovered a quick easy fix. My '68 Dart has connectors built into the harness for adding fender mounted turn signals (car didn't come with the lights, but had the connection points). If you plug your marker lights into them, guess what - you have instant marker flash with no cutting or crimping. Of course you no longer have marker lights, they only illuminate when flashing. I'm sure there's a way to maintain the running lamp use too but it's not worth the effort, in my book. This switch is a good option for '68 models and may work for other years as well if you want this function. Enjoy,

Enjoy, Bill You could retain the fender top turn signal lights by building a splitter that plugs into the harness.

Dan could illuminate on this subject more, but in Maine ones car would not pass its annual safety inspection if the side marker lights did not stay burning when headlights and parking lights are on. This became apparent to me when I took my 67 Dart in for its inspection, and had to explain to the inspection guy that was not mandatory equipment in 1967 to have parking lights on when headlight burn, and side marker lighting. I guess he doesnâ€™t see to many pre 1968 vehicles in his shop. 1967 was the last year for no side marker lights. In 1968, federally mandated side marker lights, and parking lights to be burning when headlights are on became the law of the land. So be carful of John Law, he could write you up. Disabling the sidemarker function to gain a side turn signal function is zero-sum at best (minus one plus one...or could be minus two plus one). Sidemarker lights are a really effective safety device; they greatly reduce your likelihood of being T-boned, sideswiped, or (if you also have sidemarker reflectors) hit while parked. Really not smart to eliminate them. Side repeaters, on the other hand, are also a good, effective safety device that helps prevent lane-conflict collisions and other kinds of badness. The idea behind the markerflash mod is to have both functions served by the one lamp. The '68 lights are more difficult than the '70-up lights to rework this way, because the '68 lights are one-wire devices with a body ground. So you have to drop in a couple of relays as described at the link. It's not difficult or costly. The '68 lights can also be improved for both functions with better bulbs. The ones you want are #3886X.

Good input guys, thanks! So Daniel, you're saying that the process outlined for rewiring LED flashers will also work for one-wire, frame grounded running lights?

Yep, correct â€” thanks for pointing out to me that the language in the article wasn't clear on that point. It wasn't! I've gone in and fixed it so that it is.

You'll have a hard time finding them -- they are not a parts store item. Let me know if you need them (or relays etc.)
