I'm restoring a 62 Valiant 225 3 on the tree and wanting to install a A833. Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions or links will be appreciated. I'm particularily interested in the what bell housing I need, as well as will I need to change the present flywheel & clutch. Also, will my present rear transmission support work? |

I am in the middle of a similar swap in a 63 valiant w/ 3 speed. I am ignorant about the process and could use any guidance this forum can provide. What I have done so far is cut the floor using a 66 hump as a template. I have installed the O/D tranny for a test fit but I think I have some issues: I will get numbers off the bell housing I am using, but I think the Z bar that came with the 3 speed has the wrong angle when connected to the new bell housing. I removed the Ball mount that came on the new bell housing and installed the bracket from the three speed bellhousing that the Z bar connects to. I was able to mount the tranny and bellhousing over the three speed clutch, is that going to be a problem? I'll keep you posted as I move along with this on what I encounter. Any help from the forum will be greatly appreciated. |

I realize that I will have issues with the Z bar and linkages, but I can work them out. My biggest concern is the tunnel on a 60-62 A-body is smaller than in the 63's and later. I'm wondering what I will run into if I use a 833 (I assume a short tail shaft). Will the 3 speed rear transmission mount work? Also, will the gear shift lever miss the seats? |

The rear mount worked fine on the 63 swap. The shifter clearance against the internals all depends on what the shifter handle came out of. I think the one I have is going to need a torch and bend to clear the dash and radio knobs; I havent put the seats in yet so dont know about clarance there yet. I cant spend time on it this weekend but if I havent collected everything I need for the O/D soon I may just take the original 4 speed out of a 64 hardtop I have just to get her back on the road. I've been commuting in a 68 Town and Country Wagon 70 miles a day while I'm fixing the valiant and thats costing me plenty at 10mpg! |

My latest concern is whether the 4 speed hump will be in the way of the drivers seat when slid forward. |

Thanks. I wonder if the overall body width of my 62 is the same as your 63. We may not be comparing apples against apples. Any way you can get a measurement from door to door? |

An A-Body 833 4-speed will fit into the 60-62 A-Body chassis if all the correct parts are used. (This swap has been successfully done by many others) You will likely need a special shifter "stick" to clear the bench seat. When I do these swaps, I usually cut a long slit into the driver's side of the trans tunnel "hump" and bend it open enough to clear the shifter and linkage. After the trans is installed, we trim and patch-in extra metal to cover the opening. DD |

Thanks Doug. Thats pretty much what I had guessed. By the way, I have a Signet with bucket seats. Hopefully, that will give a little more room for the shifter. |
