Well this is starting to bite. My goal was to remove the original and swap with the new. Original is 67 floor shift being replaced with a 70 colum shift that has already been rebuilt. As Im taking the cross member and related parts off I notice the nuetral switch is different and the mounting areas for the floor shift are not on the other. What problems am I going to run into trying to get this new one installed? Rebuilding the 67 is not an option since I have already done the 70 and the motor. Will the switch bolt into the newer unit? I see it has 3 prongs and mine has 1 wire that bolts on. Is swapping the tails an option? Thanks for all the help and advice.

You can just switch tail shaft housings, the switch has to be used with the selecter arm in the trans that they came with. The single post is just the neutral start the other one has backup light switch.

Hmmm these are more issues than I realized. The book says the converters are 10 3/4 not specifing any years. I have a new converter already installed on the new unit is there a difference? It does show the different plugs. Can I just swap the nuteral switch from the old to the new as I dont have the wiring to accomadate the 3 prong. Also with the 70's trans being rebuilt what would I need to do to the tail for preventive maint.

1967 and earlier engines have a different size crank register than the '68 and later engines. The "Pocket" that the snout of the converter goes into is smaller in the early crankshaft.
If you have a late transmission and an early crankshaft, you have an issue. If you are installing a later engine, then it shouldn't be an issue, unless you retained your early crankshaft.
If you are building some power and need to install a higher stall converter anyway, you can order it to work with your crankshaft and have it fit the later transmission.
I think Charrlie_S has done this. Give him a PM about what you have, and he can probably help you with the specifics to order something that will work with what you have.

Edit: I don't believe you can use the early Neutral Safety Switch in the late transmission, no. Could be wrong. Get more input.

Thanks Guys. Ill do more research in the am. The engine and trans are a matched set I had rebuilt but didn't notice the differences in the trans tail. So the 70 drivetrain is going into the 67 dart-hopefully.

If the engine and trans are a matched set (both 68 or newer) there is no issue with the converter.

Keep the 3 pin neutral safety switch in the later trans, and connect the single wire to the center pin. Leave the two end pins unused.

I am not sure that you can swap the tailhousing between the 67 trans and the 70 trans. I know the tailshaft itself is different (different splines on the front of the shaft), but not sure about the housing.

You could try contacting A&A trans and ask them if the tail housing will swap.

pull both switches if threads the same ...no need to switch tailhousings

I did not see the reason to swap tailhousings, last time I checked, the NSS is mounted into the main case.
No matter, just use the center pin on the 3 prong switch for the safety ground, as already noted above.

And if the engine is also a 68 or newer SL6, then you should be "good to go".
Drop it in & fire it up... let us know how it runs.

Tail shaft housing has the mount for the floor shifter (extra casting just ahead of the speedo drive mount and it has the 2 holes to mount the shifter pivot bracket)

Well hopefully I get the old one out by the weekend so I can see if I can weld the shifter bracket on. If not swapping the ends is my option so far. I guess if it was easy everyone would be doing these.

Simple just remove the 2 screws under the trans mount and that will expose the snap ring holding the rear bearing. You will have to remove the 6 bolts and the speedo drive also. the other tail shaft housing will fit.
