Post subject: | 65 dart brake light issue |
I'm mechanical in nature, not electrical, so bear with me. 1965 Dart. S6 auto. all stock wiring except for HL relays and elect. ignition. Back wire harness all stock and all color codes are correct acc. to the shop manual diagram. Problem: Intermittent brake light outage. Most times, the brake lights work perfectly. Then only the right works, then only the left, then both, then one or the other. Works this way with the parking lights on or off. When one light is out, if I signal right, then left....both brakelights will work again. All tail, signal and stop lights work perfectly. Trouble shooting: I applied the brake pedal, then pulled the bulb assy. the "tail" light element was lit, not the brake element. when I ground the socket to the light, both elements lit up in the housing. Now I'm thinking socket ground. With 1 brakelight on, I placed a ground to the right and left sockets, tied them together then to the bumper. Still; only 1 brake light. Now I'm thinking "hot lead" is the issue. How can I track this one down? I think a quick fix would be to add a jumper from 1 stop lamp to the other; but that might mess up the blinker circuitry....I don't know. Anyone have and suggestions? |

A bad turn signal switch is most likely. |

Yup, you need a new turn signal switch. Remember, the brake light power goes through the turn signal switch. I'm out of the good OE ones right now at the moment AFAIK all you can get are cruddy overpriced Chinese ones. |

These directional signal switches get sloppy after several decades, and the contacts don’t contact so well. Next time the lights aren’t working as they should try a little test by gently pulling signal switch lever toward steering wheel and see if lights start working correctly. If so, it’s time to change out the directional switch. Don’t mess around trying to rebuild the switch it’s a waste of time, just get a new one, and do the job once. |
