After getting my head back on and everything running fairly well I decided to drive my car to work. Seeing as to how my fuel gauge works periodically from what I can tell I figured a good idea would be to fill up, go 100 miles, fill up again and figure my mpg so as not to run out of fuel. Well, immediately after filling up I smelled fuel while hanging the pump up. Looked under the car and noticed a 1' diameter puddle of gas under the tank. The gas kept on coming. I should note that once the pump clicked off I did go until it clicked of the second time which was about $1.50 more. As I attempted to leave the station the car kept cutting out. It seemed like it just wasn't getting fire. It didn't matter what rpm it would just die but since it is a 3 on the tree it would start back up after a few seconds. I made it on to the freeway a short distance from the filling station and the car seemed to be doing fine. When I got off about 12 miles later it died on the off ramp so I pulled over to investigate. Fuel was still poring from my tank. The car was barely idling at maybe 400 rpm, missing and spitting black smoke so I decided to bump the idle up a little. After raising the idle I walked to the back of the car to check out the fuel leak. When I did I heard what sounded like a vacuum leak. I noticed it coming from the fuel cap. I pulled the cap and the idle jumped up to about 1200 and smoothed out. It had a fairly good amount of suction on it. Put the cap on, runs like pure crap. Pull it off, runs great. My cap is stock as far as I know and it is vented from what I can tell sucking on it with my mouth. This is my first time filling the tank. What could cause such an ordeal? I am thinking maybe I filled the tank too much and blocked a vent in the tank somehow or another? Any suggestions?

Fix that leak before you do anything else.

A good suspect is the filler neck grommet. If you haven't changed it out, it needs it.

Could be coming from the fuel sender hole. Check and see if its dripping down around the hole the sending unit goes into.

Where I live it's a rule of thumb to stop filling the tank after the first click, few reasons; with being paranoid as one of the main ;).

I think you plugged some sort of vent, and the tank needed to use the filler cap to achieve correct flow exhange of fuel - oxygen etc.

Worst case: pull the tank and clean it properly.

easy fix would be to get your factory manual find all parts of the car that ineract with the tank such as vents, filler neck, fuel sender hole etc. my vote is something around the filler neck grommet.

My current /6 car is a 71 dart but the po switched the engine to an 82 for whatever reason. I am suspecting the filler tube grommet also as the source of the leak. I couldn't really tell where the leak was coming from because it was so big. It seemed to be coming from everywhere which would make sense if it was from there due to it being toward the top of the tank. I also think I must have plugged a vent too. I know on my valiant I had when I dropped the tank on it there was like 39 vent lines on that thing. I don't have a manual for the car but I will get one soon. I let the other one I had go with the valiant when I sold it. The carb seemed to load up when the cap is on which seems strange to me. It seems like it wouldn't get enough fuel if there is a big vacuum in the tank. Seems like the fuel wouldn't come out if the air won't come in.

Your problem seems fairly big, perhaps you could look into getting the tank hot tanked? (I think you call it). I didn't think that large a leak would be from the grommet. But if you plugged up a vent somehow some foreign substance it's probably time to clean it properly anyway.

More people who know far more than me will give you a better idea of what to do. As Dan said what is Make Model etc?
