| Post subject: | Trouble finding the right rear brake hose for '67 Dart |
I bought a Raybestos 24058 rear brake hose from Rock Auto (http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=304281) to replace the old one on our '67 Dodge Dart 270/225 automatic. Come to find out it's not long enough to fit in the mounting hole and to reach for the back brakes. I actually bought 2 hoses before realizing we only needed one replacement, but either way, both of the hoses aren't the right size. The previous mechanic that worked on the car for my Aunt just wired another brake hose into the mounting bracket and used the shorter hose, but it's not the safest alternative in the world, by any means. We'd like to get one that actually fits. Can anybody give me any help as to what hose to buy? My friend that's a mechanic tried to match them up the other day, too, and after ordering a couple and them not being the right size, either, we need some help. |

By "hose" do you mean the small diameter metal line going from the distribution block on the rear axle tube to the drum? If so, you can make this "line" yourself. If you have an actual hose there, its not correct by any means. Pictures by chance? ~RDE~ |

No... I'm talking about the actual flexible rubber brake hose that goes from the mounting bracket near the fuel tank to the distribution block. We can't find an actual brake hose that looks like this one that fits: http://info.rockauto.com/getimage/getim ... 4058-1.jpg[/url] |

Ah, I confused the word "right" for the "right" side of the car instead of the "right" (correct) hose for the rear. If you can't find anything that will fit, I would look into having a line made byline a local hydraulic shop. ~RDE~ |

Why in the world are these things so hard to fit? And why are the available brake hoses designated to work but aren't long enough? |

Ive run into the same problem. How much shorter are we talking here? I would imagine you are trying to replace this hose with the rear end hanging under the car, which is a good idea since you want to make sure that that hose wont break if its too short when the suspension extends. I bet it would fit if the rear end was up in the car (i.e. jacking the car and holding it with the rear axle. Maybe there is a different car or rear axle reference you can give that might have a longer hose? How long is the hose you have? |

The correct hose probably got consolidated & cross referenced into oblivion. You end up some bean-counter looking at some spec & saying- "that should fit" - while never having even looked under the car in question. It would be nice to get the correct part that actually fit your car. But after enough decades that sometimes isn't possible. I would consider looking at a rear hose for a later Dart & seeing if something might be long enough to fit. On later cars the hose was usually integral to the distribution block that mounted to the axle housing. The body end fitting of the hose should be pretty standard. |

Why don't you lower the mounting point on the chassis. Shouldn't be to hard, it is just a steel bracket. |
