cant seem to find a detailed discription on what to do. i am rusty when it comes to v8's with chains, i haavnt built one in over 6 years. and ive done lots of VW's which is gear driven (cam rotates reversed) anyways, i got my double roller cloyes set, that i got in the group buy, *THANKS CHARLIE* and i knocked the crank gear on. turned the motor over so the front piston (1?) is tdc. the dot on the gear is facing the 10ish O clock position. for the cam gear, i suppose it only goes on 1 way, and just line up its dot (4ish position) with the cranks dot. do i have this right? whats the cam bolt torque? and also ive read about degreeing the cam gear with bushings, is this really nessasary to do with a stock build, cam is a reground stocker. thanks everybody, i really appreciate it |

The dots on the gears are not "lined up" like a chev. The cam gear dot is at the top (12 o clock) the crank gear is at 12 o clock as well. Thats the way its supposed to work. I always do a rough degree job because if Oswald has been drinkin at lunch he misstamps about half the gears...... |

Er-ruh…I agree with you that relying on the dots isn't wise because they're apt to be misstamped, but that "cam and crank at 12:00" is something I've never heard or seen in any slant-6 service literature. The factory manuals all say to put the crank snout, crank sprocket dot, cam sprocket dot, and cam bolt in a straight line, in that order from right to left, and they even provide a photo:

i was just gonna post a picture that i found in my buddies service manual, and tell that guy that hes on ludes. i appreciate it dan man. i dont have any way to degree this cam, can i assume that this timing set i have is correct, since it is one of those hand matched cloyes sets from the recent group buy? |

From what I see looks like crank needs to be rotated so that the center line of both and cam intersect the crank mark. Richard |

if the crank needs to be rotated, how do i know which way would make it truely TDC, i eye balled the piston to where it looks to be tdc. i guess it could be off either direction by just a hair |

The one on the left looks fine. Now you need to see how your cam events line up. There is information in the Engine FAQ about doing this. Chances are, it's going to be pretty close. What cam do you have in there? CJ |

You can but it is always best to check them. The last two timing sets I installed were stamped 1 tooth off. just saying.  Rick |

Depending on how accurate the regrinder was, it may be off a little. There are other variations that can effect things as well. They are cumulative, but your probably fine. There isn't any way to "Know" unless you degree the cam. It's not to much trouble to get a dial indicator out and make sure the events occur correctly. A degree wheel is needed, though you can print one out if you don't have one. Do a google search. Also, make sure your looking at the correct scale. Some of the events are referenced from Bottom Dead center, others from Top dead center. CJ |
